U S trade deficit falls to five year low in December
The Commerce Department reports December exports at 31.1 billion and imports at 38.3 billion, shrinking the monthly trade deficit to 7.2 billion, the smallest in five years. Airplanes led exports, boosted by Boeing strikes, with about 1 billion shipped abroad. For 1989 the year ended with a 108.6 billion deficit, lowest since 1984.

Keystone loses bid to block Pennsylvania auto insurance rate cuts

Deer on road causes fatal township crash
Regina A. Webb of 382 Patterson Road, 40, died of internal injuries after a deer appeared on North Beaver Township road. Her husband Dale L. Webb 33 swerved to avoid the animal causing their car to overturn. He was treated and released at St Francis Hospital. Obituary to be announced by Naga Funeral Home.

Former Neshannock man leads veteran benefits effort
Edward G. Lewis 44 of Neshannock is the first assistant secretary for information and resources management in the new Veterans Affairs Department. Sworn in January 5 by Vice President Quayle, he directs VA data and computer resource management for over 240,000 staff across 172 medical centers, 58 regional offices, and 113 cemeteries, overseeing 1,200 employees in Washington and regional centers. Lewis, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel with 21 years active duty, is a 1963 Neshannock High School graduate and Naval Academy alumnus. He previously led the White House liaison office in the Defense Department and served with the office of the president-elect after the Bush campaign. He remains the son of Trevor Gwyn and Florence Lewis of 2535 Blossom Lane.
