Weather blamed for five mishaps at county roads event
A two to three inch snowfall yesterday caused five area accidents. Police reported three on N Mercer Street near Edison Avenue at 9 24 p m injuring one man. Several drivers including Philip Bridenbaugh Naomi McHenry and William Pruden were involved with minor injuries or none. Local events included the first annual Sweetheart Ball for Education Center I at First Christian Church from 7 to 9 p m co sponsored by Midwestern Unit IV and the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children.

State police reported two burglaries in the county yesterday. Edward C. Badger’s 2880 Ellwood Road residence was entered between 5 and 9 p.m.. thieves took a 12 gauge shotgun and a tape recorder valued at about 100 dollars and ransacked the house. Norman Flouter’s 326 Roberts Lane home was broken into between 7 and 10:10 p.m.. items stolen included a movie camera a vase projector a treasure chest a ladies watch two pins and assorted coins totaling about 254 dollars.

Committee may soon give names for stub canal posts
Ellwood City The Committee for a Stub Canal Inc expects to name individuals to sub committee posts very shortly. At a recent meeting R J Denny Schill said possible names were discussed and plans made to present to waterway associations. The stub canal would run Beaver Pa to Warren Ohio, through Ellwood City and New Castle. The committee awaits Congress funding for an Army Corps of Engineers feasibility study.

SWEEP program cuts welfare rolls in Montgomery County
The Welfare Department reported SWEEP reduced Montgomery County assistance payments by 1.9 million. Seven hundred twenty seven people were removed from welfare rolls and 41 cases adjusted. Since starting there, the caseload fell about 800 to 4705.

Jail standards set to take effect March 3 in Pennsylvania
