New Castle developer Thomas George, a Kent smoker, switched to Marlboro Lights after Pennsylvania raised the cigarette tax by 35 cents a pack effective Jan 1. He smokes two to three packs daily and says he has not considered quitting.
The Silver Sneakers program offers senior citizens free YMCA or Y membership, drawing many older adults to join for access to fitness classes, gyms, and community activities. The program aims to promote health, independence, and social engagement among seniors.
More than 200 seniors aged 65 plus with Highmark insurance receive free YMCA memberships under the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program. Highmark pays up to 30 dollars per month per person based on use, with HealthCare Dimensions managing the program across 19 providers and 530 centers in 14 states, involving over 100,000 participants.
About 252 seniors 65 and older enroll in a program at the New Castle Community Y. Eligible participants must have Highmark supplemental insurance. Highmark reimburses the Y per person while seniors enjoy full access and thrice weekly specialized exercise classes.
Officials warn scams are increasing as teens and adults fall for phony online sales and account theft. A January $2 500 ATV purchase failed after a Canadian site scam and a October embezzlement drained a Pulaski woman’s accounts. Trooper Pearson of the Area IV Computer Crimes Task Force notes scammers use chat messages and mass emails with large address lists. Scams like phishing claim bank accounts are frozen by the FDIC or Patriot Act.
Shenango Township police seek clues after a Saturday evening armed robbery at Red Apple Kwik Fill on New Butler Road. A man with a knife demanded cash from the clerk and fled with an undetermined amount. Police note a red truck may have been used. several witnesses were in the area. New Castle native Dr Mary O Connor a Florida orthopedic surgeon led the team that performed a partial hip replacement on evangelist Billy Graham on January 6 at St Luke s Hospital Jacksonville. Graham discharged February 3 plans a June crusade in Kansas City MO while continuing outpatient therapy in Jacksonville.
