Judge Porter hears liquor license applications with temperance women present. He will not render decisions until early March as he questions witnesses and takes cases himself, noting a decline in liquor sales and urging a nationwide reporting system to curb intemperance.
John R. Burgoon, an aged grocer, was struck by a northbound passenger train while crossing the Pennsylvania track at South Sharon. He rolled under the locomotive about 15 feet, was crushed, and died in hospital at 2 a m. He is survived by his wife and 12 children, all of whom live in South Sharon.

Officials say no publication can reveal aims or results and a crisis or adjustment remains uncertain. Oregon and California move to curb Asiatic land ownership and Chinese residents protest Roosevelt policies favoring Japanese.
Joseph Janer of Brooklyn was arraigned in Baltimore County on a felonious assault charge involving 12 year old Catherine Lorech. He pleaded not guilty and a change of venue to Towson was granted for a March trial. His wife Mrs Joseph Janer claims he is a lunatic driven by alcohol and should be placed in an asylum.
Newark dispatch reports Lewis Dreher shot and killed his wife after she sought his arrest for mistreating his stepdaughter. He then killed himself with the same weapon, following allegations that the husband beat the girl.
The certificate mentions Charles Glasser of West Pittsburg but is not the Charles K. Glasser of 204 Huron Avenue. The Vindicator notes the discrepancy regarding identifications.
District Attorney Jerome signaled he may withdraw from the Panama Canal libel matter if federal authorities do not hand over the prosecution of the Press Publishing Co. The federal grand jury resumed its canal libel probe with William Nelson Cromwell appearing for several hours.
The Union Hatters of America appeal to labor orders nationwide as 20 000 hatters strike, nine tenths of the trade. It states strike financing requires 75000 dollars a week, a sum already paid out in benefits the previous week.
Obituary note lists deaths including Mrs. Howard L. DuShane age 23 of 132 Crawford avenue, Charles Blair 76 of Clearview, F T Wilson 86 of Camp Run, John F. Cleary 64 of Big Beaver township, and McMichael 59 of Denver.
Nashville dispatch reports the Cooper case jurors from a new venire of 500 are to be drawn as the fourth week of the trial begins. Judge Hart says two impartial jurors should be chosen quickly amid espionage fears and threats.
Dr. Thomas S. Suleeba the Assyrian will speak at Third United Presbyterian Church Monday evening on The Eastern Question. Admission is free with a free will offering to be taken, following yesterday’s church talks.
Washington reports indicate Congress will authorize construction of two 26 000 ton battleships for the U S Navy this session after the House passed the naval appropriation bill. London notes Prime Minister Asquith and Sir Edward Grey push for six new dreadnoughts amid cabinet discussions. William Bartlett of Chestnut Street ends his household.
Dayton police acknowledge no progress in solving Elizabeth Fulhart’s cistern death as fear and rumors spread. Reports of attempted assaults surface, with some police doubting the veracity of claims while awaiting a chemist’s ruling on the cause of death.
A Grosvenor Street lodging house fire in Manchester leaves ten dead and about a dozen seriously hurt with others lightly injured. Three hundred men slept inside as panic spread with many leaping from roofs and windows. Fire crews arrived but ladders were too short to reach upper floors.
President nominates Stuart M. Lupton of Tennessee to be consul at Catania Italy. The Italian consul was moved from Messina after the earthquake disaster. Lupton had served as vice consul at Messina at the time of the disaster.
W H Wood of 557 Delaware Avenue clarifies he is not the W H Wood named in the Vindicator petition for a license filed by Thomas P Shoaff and Francis G Shoaff. He states he is not in that business.
All members are asked to meet in the church basement Monday at 7 30 for a social and business hour. The gathering will feature music short addresses and an informal discussion of church problems.
D. G. Simonton of Scioto street in the Third ward was arrested and jailed Monday morning by City Treasurer C. W. Duff for defaulting on city and school taxes totaling $1.88.
King Edward and Queen Alexandra travel from London to Dover then Berlin to meet Kaiser Wilhelm amid strained Anglo German relations. Officials frame the trip as private and nonpolitical with buffer diplomats and a brief two day schedule in Berlin before the king returns.
New York February 8 George J Gould denies Pittsburg reports he will retire from the railroad business. He says he expects to remain in business many years and will likely be active today and ten years hence. Mrs George Massie of Chestnut street is ill with tonsillitis.
Rev E E Higley labeled swearing a sign of weak character and low intelligence. He cited statistics by education level showing profanity declines with higher learning and condemned oath use as against both divine and civil law.
In Rome on February 8 the pope received 14 American under-officers and sailors from the supply ship Celtic, introduced by Mr Kennedy of the American college. He praised American munificence toward earthquake victims, called the United States a strong and generous nation, and noted humanitarian conduct in Sicily and Calabria. Each visitor received a silver medal and a kiss on the hand, then were presented to Cardinal Merry Del Val.
Wreck occurred near Coldwater Mississippi as the Chicago flyer ran off the track before the post office. Two killed one a fireman and an Italian, 12 injured including engineers, clerks, and passengers. Open switch blamed, no employee admitted fault. President Harrihan of Illinois Central on relief train. Train carried 149 passengers.
