Adjacent stores Dr J Miller's shoe shop Betty Gay apparel and Cramer's Clothing sustained smoke damage as fire crews kept watch for three hours before lifting the blaze.
Rome reports Pope Pius XI canceled audiences for a second day due to a slight grippe affecting his health. Medical attendants visited him before midnight and again in the morning. condition not improved enough to permit audiences. Reuter dispatch notes the illness described as grippe with a cold.

Washington February 7 President Roosevelt signed a 725 million interagency appropriation to extend the WPA program to June 30 despite calls for 875 million to cover about 3 million relief recipients. Congress cut the request, sending the measure to the White House with a relief message expected.
Pittsburgh report says two armed bandits waited for agents to deposit collections then held up the Metropolitan Insurance Company office in the Berger Building and escaped with 2300. They found 3000 more in an unlocked safe. Cleveland dispatch notes three armed men robbed a Prudential Life Insurance branch, escaping with about 5000 in cash and checks.
A New York policeman discovered the body of a 40 year old woman in a snow swept doorway on the West Side midtown section. The victim appeared assaulted with facial bruising and torn clothing.
Howard Romig, 22, surrendered to police in Wind Gap after a dispute with Artiss Bushkirk, the housekeeper. He allegedly shot Dorothy Bushkirk, 24, and her 16 month old daughter Mary May in the farmhouse kitchen. Both victims were found dead. autopsy pending.
Britain presses for withdrawal of all foreign troops from Spain as Premier Neville Chamberlain seeks a negotiated peace to end the Spanish civil war. Diplomats in London concentrate on removing the danger spot from European politics and to avert Franco's military victory through political gains.
J C Thompson age 79 of 219 Hazelcroft avenue is in critical condition at St Eliza Abels hospital Youngstown after an automobile crash Sunday evening en route to Cleveland to visit daughter Mrs A B Frackhouser Ke Also in the wreck were occupants Mrs Jenkins and Mr Jenkins The other car was driven by G F Sharp of Cleveland and collided with a machine driven by John Mealin of Youngstown Thompson sustained a fractured rib and pneumonia complications Sharp suffered a broken arm Jenkins skull fracture contusion of leg remains uncertain due to report wording
Funeral arrangements set for Mrs. Stelia McCauley an elderly Armstrong County resident who died from burns suffered when her clothing ignited on an open stove. Neighbors spotted smoke and alerted authorities yesterday at her Worthington area home.
Margaret Myers, age 42, of Elwood, passed away on Tuesday February 7 1938. The funeral and wake details are not listed in the fragment.
