DES MOINEL IOWA UPI The Town House voted to abolish the gallows for first degree murder but kept the death penalty for kidnapping for ransom. A late amendment retained gallows for kidnappers after hours of debate. A veteran legislator recalled witnessing a condemned man die by rope.
Ruth Ann Stefanik 22 of Johnstown died at Latrobe Hospital after a car driven by Susan Doyle 20 struck a PSYCH office, then hit a guard rail and plunged over a 35 foot embankment four miles east of Latrobe. Doyle was treated for head injuries.
Blair W. Cline 35 of 45 Smithfield Street lost control on Smithfield Street last night, skidding into two parked cars and a third vehicle owned by James R. McDonald 23 of 22 Smithfield Street. No injuries were reported.
Five officers and the efference chairman of United Steelworkers Local 1605 will attend District 21 Meeting March 24 in Sharon. The local voted to sponsor three members to attend the community service counseling school in New Castle. President Frank Collins will appoint the delegates. Collins, Charles R. Funngan, Anthony Frisk, Al Selsing, Jon Afilnes, and Rent Roced, erloveire committee chairman, will attend the Sharon meeting. Collins reported on the recent USW legislative conference in Pittsburgh.
A five week evening course for adults will begin Monday at Laurel Area High School rural shop. Instructed by Howard F. Fox the class covers welding positions metals cast iron hard surfacing soldering cutting brazing and welding with an arc welder. A diploma is awarded to all who attend all sessions and a nominal $5 enrollment fee is charged. Registration by calling Laurel High School is limited.
Mohawk Mounties will view a film at the Mohawk Monies 4H Horst Chub gathering tomorrow at 7 PM. The Brisbane Clark home on Cleland Mall Rd hosts the event with Junior Horseman 4 H 41 booklet guides for second year members. A discussion on the Appaloosa horse origin use and traits followed as attendees noted defects. Refreshments were served after the meeting.
A car belonging to DiNuccl Auto Service of 481 E Washington St. crashed and snapped a pole cable, sending a support line loose and breaking a jaw. A brown dog was found wedged under the front seat, later freed and seen running about. The owner, Moses, 24 W Long Ave, took the dog to Tolled ence Hospital after the collision. A 21 year old city man, seriously injured, was thrown from the car and suffered deep lacerations, possible jaw fractures, and facial injuries. The Enon Valley Telephone Co manager described the broken cable as part of a line between telephone poles.
Philadelphia district attorney Jamies Crumlish Jr said Sen Joseph Glick will be invited to testify before the grand jury probing municipal corruption. Former mayor Clark, who would appear if convenient, has said he would testify but lacks personal knowledge of the case. The investigation centers on Democratic City Committee influence over council actions and legislative passage conditions tied to party contributions.
Brownie Troop 52 held an investiture with supervision by Mrs Edgon Reynolds and Mrs Edward Barley. New members include Jeanine Anderson Carol Carlson Elizabeth Davies Margie Koonse Flavia Miller Christine Suber Barbara Weiner and others. One year members listed and officers elected Dia Bartley president Aferilyn ato vice president Joan Wilson secretary Carol Carlson treasurer Christine Suber Juliette Low chairman.
Grace M. Sloan and Thomas Minchert assailed Gov. Scranton's finance plan, claiming a Board of Finance and Revenue decision would swap U.S. Treasury certificates for debt payments, risking a 3.9 million General Fund deficit. They urged a review of the directive and its impact on state finances.
Clarence M Allen 22 killed his wife and two infants in a tabulated act then set fire to a school storeroom. Firefighters found the family dead near a cemetery while two children died from carbon monoxide exposure inside the building. Authorities reported a handwritten note in Allen's basement and said the incident occurred after he left his estranged wife. The Greensburg Salem School District, Easton area responders, and Maine Medical Center treated witnesses and investigated the blaze.

Mrs A M Jenkins died at her home at 8:30 am after a heart ailment. A longtime Grant 8 area resident born in Newle, she was wife of Wilan A Jenkins who predeceased her in 1638. Survived by three daughters and a brother, services arranged at Robert Myers Funeral Home with burial at Greenwood.
Washington (UPI) The Labor Department reported Altoona area Amooria Pa among 10 more industrial areas where unemployment deepened this month due to winter slowdown. Altoona shifted from 9 to 11.9 percent unemployment, while others showed modest gains as the new year began.
Detroit industrialist Henry Ford II urged a broad tax cut as essential to stimulate the economy. He cautioned that while it may raise the national debt in the short term, it could boost income and jobs and aid long term budget balance. He spoke at a Tuesday night gathering of the Grossel’ Ponte War Memorial Association.
In Hamburg Germany the city’s waterways are crossed by 1 45 bridges, reflecting a dense network of spanning structures across the port and harbor routes.
Donald McFarland 41 native of New Castle area and longtime Elorage resident dies after a car being serviced at Kay Brooks Garage fell on him. World War II veteran and former U.S. Army serviceman, survived by his wife Audre, eight children, siblings, and several grandchildren. Funeral with full military honors to be held in Elorage with interment at an Arizona cemetery.
Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp says 1962 net income totaled 9.755 million dollars, 2.23 dollars per share, up from 1.69 million or 3 dollars per share in 1951. President Hanley cites higher costs from a steel strike threat and inventory liquidation, plus price weakness, competition, and higher labor costs in supporting markets.
Mrs N Amabile, mother of Anthony Amabile of New Castle Wilkowhurst, dies in Baselice Italy. Born March 20 1885 she dies on March 22 at 78. Survived by son Anthony daughter Mrs Adolorata Amab ille Foltorossi Rome another son Lawrence Amabile New Rochelle ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral and interment held in Baselice Benevento province.
Mrs Mina Britton 85 of south Shenango Two Jamestown Pa died yesterday at 2 pm in her home of age related infirmities. Born Dec 3 1877 she was survived by husband Iarey F Millton and children Gayle A Briton Marian New Ray E Britton eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two sisters Glen Snodgrass and Ray McConnell also survived. Body at James Wy Based Funeral Home with viewing today and tomorrow and services at 2 pm Interment in South Shenango Cemetery.
