The Greater New Castle Association launches a city wide membership drive with 100 campaign workers in the field after a breakfast rally at The Castleton. Prominent local business and professional leaders attended the kick off as the drive aims to fund the new New Castle machinery within a week.
Paul Taylor aged sixteen of East North street made a solo flight at New Castle airport claiming to be the youngest pilot to solo an air plane in Lawrence county. Instructors praised his skill after a 15 minute flight with eight hours dual instruction and maneuvers including forced landings spins and stalls. Continued on page two.
Early fog swallowed downtown as vehicles crawled along East Washington street with lights on. Route 422 had little snow, springlike conditions for travelers. Wilmington Junction reports wild geese heading north. North Jefferson street top surface deteriorating, holes appearing. International News Service reports witnesses in Pittsburgh identified two of five suspects in Saturday's Rankin bank holdup. Bank employees and a Rankin resident flagged the two men in a stand up lineup, despite each suspect presenting alibis. Five employees and five customers were held at gunpoint while three masked men took cash and fled.
Michael Rich Jr. was buried today after a requiem mass at St. Lawrence church Hillsville. A funeral cortege followed the home blessing to the church where pallbearers Nick Marzani Frank Navorre Tony Veltri Lawrence Sheldone Albert Utopia and Nick Polito carried the coffin. Interment occurred at Holy Rosary cemetery Lewellville Ohio beside his mother who died last year.
London Feb. The Gaekwar of Baroda, ruler of one of India’s wealthiest states, died in his palace today. He was 75 years old according to a Reuters dispatch from Bombay.
A cathedral Chapter 440 Order of the Eastern Star held a testimonial dinner for 1500 attendees. A detailed grocery list reveals the scale: 14 bushels Irish potatoes, 7 bushels sweet potatoes, 850 pounds baked ham, 210 quarts ice cream, 1600 apricot sherbets, 350 pies, 300 pounds ice, 72 pounds coffee, 60 pounds mints, and other staples. The notes suggest the effort mirrored a regiment’s ration order.

Three Philadelphia youths riding in a allegedly stolen car were killed after a three mile chase by police from Clifton Heights. The vehicle crashed into a vehht standard near a West Philadelphia bridge. Identified by fingerprints at the morgue as Gustave R. Merker 22 believed driver Charles Hausch 29 and Daniel Logan 22.
Angeline Maravella charged with the murder of Michael Rich Jr of Millsville was arraigned yesterday before Alderman O H P Green and entered a not guilty plea. A preliminary hearing is planned for this week as her defense studies strategy with counsel while awaiting trial in county jail.
Tom Williams, 28, one of three negros saved by a woman sheriff from a lynch mob, confessed to the hold-up slaying of Charles Herrin, 66, a planter, authorities said. Herrin was fatally wounded in his pro-Civil War home near Tallassee Saturday night.
A large banquet in the Cathedral honored Capt Roger W Rowland, now Secretary of Property and Supplies in Governor James's cabinet. Some 1500 attendees from Lawrence County and Western Pennsylvania filled the Cathedral’s dining rooms to express high regard for the public servant in a landmark testimonial.
Labor leaders meet with Secretary of Labor and Industry Lewis G. Hines in New Castle after a Saturday dinner at The Cathedral. Attendees include Ralph Audino Nazmin D. Freeborne Frank E. D. Albert Wilson and A. G. Skuncoz. Hines outlined hopes for harmony between capital and labor and promised to return to address the Trades and Labor Assembly.
Dr Norman Stewart II, who confessed slaying his wife and three year old son in Wil Kingsburg June 14 1935, may plead not guilty by reason of insanity. Attorney James P McArdle pondered defending him but had not decided. Stewart returned from Florida last week and has remarried. His Florida wife stands by him and his mother Lena Stewart of Ludlow McKean County offers to help.
Members of the Lawrence County Wool Growers association met at Liberty Grange hall to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding. Officers elected included President J. K. Burton and W. F. McCracken, both of Scott township, Secretary S. B. Hayes, R. P. Peebles, Earl Warner, Guy Fullerton, and D. F. Erle. A morning session featured speaker W. B. Connell on Sheep Atagevent and dipping practices, followed by a banquet. County agent Norman C. Dale paid tribute to the founding.
Washington February 6 The Senate refused to confirm Floyd H Roberts of Virginia for a western district judgeship by a 72 to 8 vote The nomination drew opposition from Senators Byrd and Glass who called Roberts personal offensive to them and the party viewpoint remains unsettled
North Beaver township farmer 3.F. Miller reports an army of wild ducks swooped onto his Michaelkson Edenburg road farm a few days ago and devoured 60 of his 2,000 bushels of husked corn. He fired workers to save what remained.
Britain and France pressed for a truce with Francisco Franco as peace talks began. Franco demanded surrender by the Spanish government before any halt. Negrin’s cabinet faced a formal resignation from exile. Negrin traveled toward Toulouse to join a plan for continued resistance. Italian forces stayed aligned with Franco. Franco-Spanish border remained active with troop movements.
Pittsburgh February 6 Rivers at the Point receded this weekend as Monongahela and Allegheny levels fell from a crest of 5.41 feet, about five inches above flood stage. Depths remained near normal overall after the surge.
