Local notes report township election on Feb 19 and various community items from Strixatown Exon Valley and Haranssera. Mentions John Alford illness mail contract bidders oyster suppers church meetings weddings and a discussion of Brother Jones imposture and local mischief.
In Edenburg on February 4 1889 several residents are noted as sick or recovering including Mrs Ed Leeper and Mrs Mary Hoover. Jancesco Casareo plans a trip to Italy to visit his mother while S R Wood returns from trips to New Orleans. An oyster supper at Mrs Pres Ashton’s and a Young People alliance meeting led by Rev R A Buzza are reported along with a new baby boy born to Mr and Mrs James Hoagland. Miss Jessie Madison and Mr Taylor Robinson cooked the oysters for the event.
In New Bedford dated February 4 1889 reports say schools were closed over scarlet fever with Dr Stevenson achieving strong success in about twenty five cases. Other items note Rev Brandon's absence from a Sunday service, Huntsmen Hull Wright McBride and John Mayberry return from Arkansas, and the Sisters of Mary securing a new Villa Marie post office with Mother Odell as postmistress. Teachers in Mahoning and Pulaski townships plan an institute at No 5 school on Feb 8 with a program including invocation music duties by Lawrence Byers and essays by Alice Neal and others.
Weitz Bros. fill their ice house this week while Dindinger's horse loss is noted. Visits from George Ritchie and Willie Shinn. Miss Lou Leslie travels to Greensburg and Jennie Hunter to Beaver Falls. Oyster supper planned by Disciple church Chewton for Feb 14 15. Dedication of the new Presbyterian church drew crowds with Rev Mealy preaching. Over $1 800 raised to clear church debts.
In Big Beaver Pa on February 5 1888 residents report whooping cough in children. A Beatty plans to rebuild after a barn fire. Uiston and Noggle relocate to the Stuart McCready farm. Coal mine strikes cost about $30000 in lost wages. A controversial editor and party comments stir local discourse.
A State Institute under Lawrence County Agricultural Society will be held Thursday and Friday, Feb 14 and 15. The program features sessions on farming organization, stock care, fertility, orchard management, machinery on the farm, and discussions on dairying and fencing laws with speakers from New Castle, New Wilmington, Enon Valley, and Harrisburg.
Kittie Johns spent Sunday at home while D W Ayers of Marion Ohio visits his parents. Wm Ayers & Son book 600 churns as dairy trade grows. A Philadelphia streetcar conductor faces a deadly double murder case in Kensington as Otto Keyser is accused of killing Annie Klaus and attempting suicide.
Visiting friends were noted for Charles Cooper Della Gaston Arthur Eckels and John McCleare. Annie Tobin teaches at the school with 72 pupils while quarries resume and workers celebrate a raise. Albert Yoho Sidney Mc Cay visited David Fox. Y club met at Charles Shoaf’s. social planned at J A McCay’s for Y W C T U benefits.
A Berlin Times dispatch says German capital men believe Crown Prince Rudolph was murdered and Austria may have framed it as an act of self destruction to shield the truth. London follows the conviction as the belief grows amid tension over the prince’s death.
Virginia Governor Lee says whites and blacks cannot assimilate and Negro control of state government will not be tolerated. He urges appointing respectable men to federal offices and fair courts, urges Harrison to cease using blacks for party serv ice, and promotes black progress through useful work and shared prosperity.
A heavy Nebraska gale began at 2 AM in Alliance and reached Lincoln by 9 AM causing widespread damage. In Hastings the central school building was wrecked, four people fatally injured, one pupil killed, and the teacher Miss Aldrich fatally harmed. Lincoln and Arepahoe reports note damage but fewer injuries.
A gale toppled the east wall of Max Meyer’s three story building at Farnum and Eleventh streets Omaha Neb. causing the collapse that crushed Dunbar’s engraving shop Olsen’s clothing store and a rear shanty. Firemen and rescuers pulled out injured and dead including Mike Martin P Boyer E Olsen and others.
February 1 report notes a regional coke strike not producing expected pressure as workers and management clash over conditions. Local observers say disruptions are limited and shipments continue with partial slowdowns.
