Accident statistics show more crashes fewer injuries in New Castle
State police at the New Castle substation report last month had 8 traffic accidents with 48 injuries, versus 61 accidents and 55 injuries in January 1972. Property damage reached $157,780, with 253 traffic arrests and 3 criminal arrests, including one for drug acts and two for statutory rape. 500 complaints were received, 228 led to criminal investigations, 985 vehicles were stopped with 81 faulty certificates, 192 warnings issued, and $5,702.62 in stolen property recovered.

Teachers and board clash on TV in long dispute
In a televised four hour session Philadelphia negotiators for the Teachers Union and the School Board disclosed deep rifts stalling a 15 month contract talks. The PFT lowered wage demands by 25 percent proposing a four year package of 4 million retroactive to Feb 1. The board kept a 32 million wage offer. A fact finder proposal was rejected as no independent mediator exists. Some 1500 teachers rallied while a court hearing looms on contempt convictions and the strike enters its fifth week.

41 dogs rescued from Shenango Township home
The Lawrence County Humane Society and local authorities rounded up 41 unlicensed German Shepherds and puppies from a Shenango Township residence. The dogs were malnourished and housed in a deteriorating two story home with holes in the roof and walls. Two dogs were found dead and partially eaten. A veterinarian will examine the animals as the shelter struggles with the influx. The man housing the dogs remains hospitalized and charges for keeping unlicensed dogs or harboring animals may be filed, though health and finances are cited as factors. Authorities say many complaints had been filed previously and investigations could expand to other similar cases.

Beaver Falls Pa UP I said audit underway to determine exact amount taken by a ski masked motorist who robbed a toll collector at the Beaver Valley Interchange on the Pennsylvania Turnpike early Sunday. The bandit fired a gun and fled north on Pa 18 after the lone loot. The toll booth was the only one operating at the interchange.

Flood Warning Issued For Lake Erie Shore Areas
The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a flood warning for western Lake Erie shore areas. By midmorning water levels at Gilbralter and Toledo Creek expected to rise one to two feet above recent averages.
