Tomorrow marks Groundhog Day as Americans await the furry oracle. If the groundhog sees a shadow six more weeks of winter follow, if not overcast skies hint at an early spring. Local talk worries about a canvas cover to hide the groundhog's shadow, but no decision yet.
Eugene R. Woodson, vice president of The Railroad Credit Corporation, leapt from an eighth floor office in the transportation building. His body was badly mangled. no note explained the act. Woodson, a Roanoke native, had years of service at the Railroad Credit Corporation and roles as controller and secretary.

Casualties occurred as the car was dragged along the tracks after impact. a flagman and a lighted crossing were reported.

Chicago February 1 two men were shot and killed on the 13th floor of the First National Bank building. The deceased were J H Loewenhart president of Traders Investment Co and attorney H Phillip Grossman who had offices in the building. Police said it appeared one man shot the other then himself but no information on the shooter was available.
New Jersey State Police, in bewilderment, launch a hunt for alleged accomplices in the Lindbergh baby murder. Governor Hoffman and Col. Schwarzkopf steer renewed police action as Hauptmann conviction is held by authorities to close the case.
Rose McConnell Long becomes Louisiana's U S senator after Gov James A Noe appoints her to fill Huey P Long’s unexpired term. The move, praised as fitting, grants her until a special election in April decides the successor for the remainder of the term.
Cousius McDonald a Detroit contractor was convicted of conspiracy in the $200000 Bremer kidnapping and was sentenced to 15 years at Leavenworth Federal Judge Gunnar H. Nordbye imposed the sentence. McDonald plans an appeal as his attorneys said.

The blaze started when a slick was lit in the dining room and touched the girl's dress, as reported by Coroner Orville Potter. The incident occurred about 2:30 Friday afternoon.

She accuses him of giving away a fortune and reducing his family to poverty for his alleged strange economic ideas.

Lawrence County veterans queued to apply for the bonus as about 300 applications were prepared by 11 a m. Secretary Orville Potter said the rush would likely continue into the afternoon. The Red Cross office had handled applicants on Thursday and Friday with no prior rush.

In Los Angeles on February 1 two bandits were killed during a staged hold up of an F Monte bank after a tip from reporter Tillie Irwin. A third bandit was jailed, and Officer Joseph Fritsch lost two fingers. Clarence H. Smith and E. C. Yates died. Frank H. Smith surrendered. The informant alerted sheriff marksmen who fired back at close range.
