Professor G. H. Hallett of the University of Pennsylvania will lecture Friday evening at the High school chapel on The Teaching of Elemental Arithmetic. The talk is free and part of the teachers lecture course. The 7 pm start allows attendees to catch the Baptist church debate later.
Manager Shay faces Earth in a bowling contest at Fellow Ship alleys this evening. Both are expert bowlers and the high speed match is expected to draw public interest as pins fly.
Members of the Youngstown fishing club will meet next week to organize stocking the streams around Youngstown with 75,000 minnows to boost local fisheries.
The class of 1911 stone on the Westminster campus in New Wilmington was tarred and feathered by rival students. The Mammoth boulder, engraved with college numerals, now sits in a concrete foundation after multiple earlier pranks and re-engraving. A second stunt left the chapel piano loaded with tacks, delaying its use. Juniors seek the perpetrators.
Rev. Billy Sunday will begin a six week revival in New Castle on September 20 after local leaders secured his visit. Monday evening and Tuesday, word spread through The News bulletins and street talk as New Castle supporters pressed for the engagement. Sunday agreed to the date after a lively exchange with local workers and press enthusiasm, with indications he may also visit McKeesport later.
Councils in New Castle back a large Fourth of July celebration. Mayor Lusk and Fourth of July secretary Bert Wells urged city help to illuminate Washington Street and side streets with incandescent lights. A special committee was named to confer with the organizers and report back.
Frank R Roach of the Cumberland division of the Baltimore and Ohio rail road is named captain of police replacing County Detective J H Breen. Roach arrives tonight and will begin duty immediately with Breens former railroad precinct. He is regarded as an experienced top officer in the company.
The council did not repeal the West Falls street opening ordinance, leaving the city to cover about 1000 for the project. The measure would cost far more than the 5000 limit, with little benefit to offset. Four of six present voted for repeal, one against, one abstained. The council also approved appointing E H Perry as food inspector to fill the vacancy from Dr L A Thayer's death.
Revival meetings at the Croton Avenue M E church led by Rev Ferguson of Mt Vernon Ill show rising interest. Monday evening saw several attendees at the altar, and three cottage prayer meetings are set for mornings this week at 10 o clock. One Wednesday at Nora Stoner 51 Croton Avenue, Thursday at Romley 118 Cumberland Avenue, and Friday at Mrs Russell Davis Lorain Avenue behind 31 Haus Avenue.
Death records list David Hill age 78 in Ellwood City and Clarabelle Himebaugh age 12 of 190 Croton Avenue. Details include their identities and residence as read from the notice.
Acting on mayoral orders, City Electrician Triplett cut in the central engine house bell on East street so the alarm would sound again. Two council members went to the department and had the bell cut out, though Chief Connery disclaims involvement. firemen insist it is ready for duty.
United Press reports committees for New York Central officials and the Brotherhood of Railwaymen and the Order of Railroad Conductors failed to agree on wage and hour demands. The unions seek about 21 percent raise plus overtime rules. the railroad offered 10 percent and the talks adjourned with another conference planned.

At Primero coal mine Col Feb 1 three more bodies were recovered bringing known dead to 30. Seventy four miners remain unaccounted for as rescue work continues amid cave-ins. One hundred fifty were in the mine when the blast hit. fifty three escaped with minor injuries. A survivor named Diana do Virgin told of the roar and darkness, and of fighting to reach help as others perished.
In a dramatic session the Select council, with about 80 people outside and six members inside, moved to table but swiftly killed the ordinance that would authorize special police protection for firms facing trouble. Leaders of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tinworkers cheered as the bill was defeated, while Common councilmen expressed disappointment afterward.
Westminster President R M Russell announced in Mercer that the New Wilmington New Castle street railway will be built and in operation within ten months. He cited solved financing and secured right of way as progress, with Dr J H Veazey agreeing on the outlook.

Mrs. John Murphy of Youngstown awoke Monday to find her infant dead in bed. Officials indicate spasms caused the death, with no immediate explanation given.
