Motive In New York Slaying Revealed By Police
Police report that motive behind the New York slaying involves a wealthy patron known as Candy who accused Harry W. Cowan of coercive acts toward Edith Burton. Burton, aBrooklyn singer, described the man as a guest at the Hotel Astor for seven weeks and warned she would not tolerate further manipulation. After a quarrel over commitment, Cowan sought forgiveness by telephone. Burton scheduled a Monday night meeting where she was killed. Senator Lewis learned Cowan faced embezzlement charges at the Hotel Latham and other offenses and Cowan left the Astor on the night of the shooting, heading toward Pittsburgh when the murder occurred.
