More than 50 Soviet emigrants left Kennedy Airport for Moscow aboard an Aeroflot jet, the largest group to return from America. Many cited crime and poverty in the United States, others wanted home, culture, or family. Some hold American citizenship but expect repatriation options in the Soviet Union.

County defers action on pay adjustments

Wind Storm Trains Crash Kill Six in Tokyo Area
A seven coach train plunged from a 135 foot Amarube Bridge into a crab canning factory and a house as 67 mph winds battered western Japan. Six workers and the conductor died. Six others injured, three in serious condition. The lone crewed train had just unloaded about 180 passengers at Kasumi Station and was returning to base. Proceeding under heavy wind, the motorman described the sudden halt and fall of all coaches. The bridge ranks among Japan's highest rail spans on the Sanin Line near the coast.

Cable deal closes in New Castle to Adelphia
The sale of Cablentertainment of New Castle to Adelphia Communications Corp of Coudersport Potter County closed this morning. Adelphia will be renamed Adelphia Cable TV Inc and plans include rebuilding the system and expanding from 15 to about 40 active channels with total capacity of 54. Work is expected to begin in about four months.
