Louisiana Democrats face Wallace bid for party ballot emblem
In Baton Rouge Louisiana Democrats loyal to President Johnson lost control of the state Democratic central committee to George C. Wallace backers. The take over could jeopardize the Johnson emblem on the November ballot and spark a Wallace Johnson primary showdown that could boost Wallace votes in Louisiana. The new slate ousted Chairman Edward Carmouche 65 to 49 and named Arthur Watson, a Wallace supporter, as chairman. Moving quickly, Wallace backers proposed a primary to decide which electors appear on the Democratic ballot. The change comes as polls hint Wallace would defeat Johnson if the election were held today. The party loss adds to Johnson’s weak standing in Louisiana dating to 1964. The Minor Judiciary and Constables Association meeting Tuesday in the court house was canceled with officer elections set for Jan 16.
