Crowds formed outside the State Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Harrisburg as the 1931 license plate renewal period opened. By noon a long two abreast line stretched half a city block as State Highway Patrolmen helped process applications and answer inquiries.

Dr Charles Smyser of New Wilmington identifies two Youngstown men linked to December 9 and December 15 holdups. Corporal Marcus White and state police traced a tip from Amos Byler, a Roux feed store customer, to arrest John Senkert alias John Sanders and Francis Desmont in Youngstown.
In Cochrane Ontario the Queens Hotel blaze left six confirmed dead with 15 to 20 more unaccounted for. James Palangio and his family perished. 140 unemployed men sleeping in the basement escaped. Damage put at 75 thousand dollars and origin undetermined.
A death notice lists Frederick Schuller age 54 of 1611 South Beaver Street and several others including Mrs. Ella Shoemaker of Butler Mrs. Vernice W. Norris age 29 of 310 Sumner Avenue Louise Eleanore Smith age 14 of 102 North Wayne Street George Borco age 35 of West Pittsburg Mrs. E S McKeever of East McKeesport Pa Mrs. Nellie Grace Consta age 41 of 713 Oak Street and Eugene Paul Isabella age 1 of West Pittsburg.
A lone bandit remains unidentified in a local crime report with ongoing efforts to determine the suspect’s identity and motive. Authorities urge witnesses to come forward as investigations continue this month.
Miss Regina Norris, cashier for State Capitol Savings and Loan, and O P Brown head for Youngstown with police to view suspects in the December 20 holdup that netted 1300 dollars in cash and 1900 in checks. Authorities hold several stolen checks as proof the case nears a solve.
Efforts will be made to extradite Andy Marshall a fugitive from Mahoning County jail Ohio. He was captured Friday night by Constable Archie Shoup and Policeman Fai at Lowellville and confessed to State Police. Marshall is alleged to be one of two bandits who held up Sam Sankovitch and Ben Nosh of Bessemer along the Poland Bessemer road. They got $400 from Sankovitch. $225 was recovered. Marshall has refused to return to Pennsylvania without extradition.
H K Thompson of 724 Croton avenue was robbed of 7.80 by two men in Armstrong Alley behind his home about 8 20 p m. He was cut on the wrist during the struggle and police searched the district but could not locate the assailants. The men are described as Americans about 25 to 26. shorter man 5 5 in light hat and coat. taller man 5 10 in a blue suit and cap.
Paris reports Marshal Joseph Joffre near death as an official bulletin states his condition is critical and death could come within hours or minutes. Doctors note extreme weakness and the aged commander lies in a merciful coma with little prospect of recovery.
The Washington debate over a possible third party in 1932 yields few adherents and clear splits within the Republicans. Senators Borah and Norris reject forming a new party while urging reform within their ranks. Rumors of Gov. Pinchot as a potential leader circulate but no commitment emerges.

Frederick Schuller, veteran and longtime New Castle police officer, died Saturday about 4:30 PM at his home 1611 South Beaver Street after a two week illness from a complication of diseases. He was one of the force’s oldest members in actual service and was greatly respected by officers and many city residents for his kind acts and help.
A telegram from Phoenix Chief of Police Oscar Roberts repeats that the reward for capturing Glenn Dague and Irene Schroeder should go to him and to Jack Carter Al Rhoades Hans Coore Geo Pruitt and Léon Sandust. The county commission contends over who is entitled and the matter may go to court.
Judge David Jenkins of Youngstown issued an immediate injunction blocking the merger of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company with Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The decision, delivered at 8 15 this morning, marks a remarkable victory for Cyrus S. Zaton, the Cleveland financier who spearheaded the challenge. Lieut. Oakley Kelly, co pilot of the first transcontinental air flight, visits Grove City and New Castle guests his sister Mrs. Fred V. Brown.
