In Cairo United Nations salvage ships started clearing the Suez Canal today. Lt. Gen. Raymond A Wheeler, retired U S Army officer, oversees the clearance planning for the United Nations and announced the operation has begun.
Lt. Gen. Raymond A. Wheeler said UN salvage work to clear wrecked ships and bridges in the Suez area would begin Friday morning. He reported Egyptian permission was granted only today to start the operations.
Downtown New Castle saw crowds at the exchange, wary skaters and kids with new ice skates, with traffic jammed from Diamond to County Line Street. Snowy conditions slowed travel while churches planned watchnight services for the new year and postal workers resumed full mail routes.

An Air Force four engine training plane with eight men aboard crashed near Williows Alaska about 50 miles north of Anchorage. The wreckage was spotted on Bald Mountain and a ground party was en route. Survivors were not confirmed and the crew identities were not released.
Soviet authorities accelerate repatriation of Polish prisoners from the USSR with over 5 000 Poles returning in seven weeks. The move follows rising anti Soviet sentiment in Poland and a swelled tally of some 400 000 Poles still dispersed in the USSR. Many returnees are former prisoners or Polish descendants from Baltic and Ukrainian settlements. Moscow eases passages around Lithuania Estonia and Latvia.
Arthur B. Van Buskirk of Mellon & Sons was named chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank at Cleveland. He has served as director and deputy chairman since last January as the Cleveland district covers a wide area of western Pennsylvania.
All-time traffic fatalities were reported as 713 during the four day Christmas holiday, surpassing the previous 609 record and the National Safety Council forecast of 660. Authorities vow continued aggressive enforcement as New Year celebrations approach.
In Philadelphia an 80 year old retired Salvation Army officer Lt Col Fred W Seiler plans to marry 67 year old widow Eva J Cooke Castile. Seiler has served over 55 years and his son will officiate the ceremony. Castile is widow of evangelist George W Cooke of New York.
The James Benson home near Shenango Street and Sycamore Street burned last night, leaving a family of five homeless. Fire officials estimate $5500 in damages and say the fire started in a first floor electric switch box. About 20 Shenango volunteers fought two and a half hours of flames. the couple and three children aged six months to two and a half years were visiting relatives in Princeton.
Andrew Walsh announced the New Castle District Sales Tax Office is in full operation at 222 S. Mill St in the Donati Building. Floyd Alt oversees the office serving Lawrence and Butler Counties with inquiries by phone or in person. The office is one of six district offices reporting to the Pittsburgh regional office.

Two people, Mr and Mrs Allen Redman of Lancaster, die after a three car collision two miles south of Centre Hall on Route 53. Four others are injured including two Catholic nuns. The Redman car reportedly spun after impact and was struck by a subsequent vehicle.
