Prices rise again as inflation persists in November
UPI reports the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index climbed 1 percent in November marking the third straight monthly rise. Housing transportation and food led the gain while medical costs showed the smallest uptick. Real weekly earnings rose 4 percent but remain down 4.1 percent for the year. Used car prices jumped 5.1 percent as gasoline edged higher and new car prices edged up after October's drop.

Port Authority officer shot dead at Journal Square station
Port Authority Officer William Perry 32 was killed after ordering a man to extinguish a cigarette on a PA Transit line train. Perry wrestled on the platform and tracks with the assailant who then fired five shots, escaped in a black Oldsmobile, and took its driver. Perry, a Roselle native and father of two, died at Jersey City Medical Center.

Synfuels may be toxic says official
EPA Chief Douglas Castle warned at a Synthetic Fuels Corp meeting that producing synfuels could release toxic and cancer causing pollutants unless safeguards are adopted. He urged the firm to adopt strict anti pollution guidelines and emphasized environmental safety first. He cited possible emissions of cadmium arsenic mercury and organic pollutants and noted water contamination risks from waste disposal. He pointed to foreign gasification plants and coke ovens as warning signs and cited Japanese retirees dying of lung cancer at much higher rates among exposed workers.
