Youngstown man gets prison term for holdup
John Henry Maiden Jr. of Youngstown was sentenced to five and a half to 15 years in the Western State Penitentiary for the 1968 robbery of the Red Carpet Restaurant on Wilmington Road. He fled to Canada after being found guilty at trial, was arrested in Buffalo, and returned to local authorities. Edward Samuel Martire, also of Youngstown, received one to five years for narcotics possession with credit for time served. Others jailed or fined included Lynda Black for forgery, David Richard McLaren for robbery with accomplice, and several driving related offenses with probation or fines.

Viet Cong Promises 3 Day Christmas Truce Amid Bomb Raids
Eight B52 bombers pounded infiltration routes north and northwest of Saigon before the Viet Cong announced a three day Christmas truce to start at 1 a.m. Saigon time. Allied forces continued operations and patrols. In the night, 17 targets were shelled and two U.S. helicopters downed with four wounded and two killed. A major clash 120 miles west of Saigon left 51 Viet Cong dead and three government casualties. Across the region, U.S. air power and ground forces targeted insurgent routes from Cambodia as combatants reported a grim tally of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese losses versus American casualties.
