Chestnut Plan Proposed To Solve Japan Food Problem
Prof Kai Iriya of the Agriculture and Forestry Department urges planting 150 million chestnut trees across Japan to cut rice imports. The plan envisions 1 000 trees per two and a half acres, on riverbanks hills and vacant lots to avoid reducing cultivated land. Chestnuts, he says, are more nutritious than white or sweet potatoes and could lower prices and boost consumption. He will seek government support from Minister Seiji Hayami.
