A catastrophic explosion at the Jacobs Creek coal mine near Connellsville traps hundreds of workers just before noon. Rescue teams struggle amid rising casualties as authorities confirm a large number of miners feared dead or injured.
A massive explosion at Darr mines in Jacobs Creek traps about 400 workers, including 100 Americans and many Hungarians. Smoke pours from the slope mouth and the mine entrance is wrecked, hindering rescue efforts and leaving survival uncertain as fire rages inside.
Two coasting accidents late Wednesday afternoon left Edwin Jameson five injured by a horse, with a three inch cut behind the right ear and Charles Waddington eight knocked against a sewer cover near East street. Edwin escaped serious harm. Charles recovered after a bandage and medical attention.
Announcement states the Rosena No 1 furnace of Carnegie Steel will shut down Saturday for repairs The plant had resumed last Monday after a two week suspension and will undergo extensive overhaul of the whole furnace and stacks.

Mrs Mary Fisher widow of Thomas G Fisher of Hickory township died Thursday at 7 am at her home near Neshannock Falls after years of poor health She was 87 a lifelong Rich Hill church member and mother of 11 with eight surviving Funeral services set for Saturday at 1 pm at the residence with burial in Eastbrook U P cemetery.
John Gillespie, a well known Plaingrove farmer living five miles from North Liberty, died suddenly Wednesday morning at his home from heart trouble. He was about 70, survived by his wife and two sons Everett V. Gillespie of 27 Miller Street, and another son T. Gillespie at home. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant M. E. church. E. V. Gillespie left yesterday to attend the funeral.
Miss Ella Morgan of Wampum and Mr Wayne Manning of Pittsburg were united in marriage on Wednesday. Both are well regarded by a large circle of friends.

The defendants Alice Reebel and Charles Wellendorf, who previously refused, consented to photographs today at noon through their attorney W S Anderson acting for The News. The cuts will likely appear in The News tomorrow.
