Viet Cong terrorists fired a grenade from a passing car into the street in front of an American officers billet in Saigon. Five Vietnamese civilians and one policeman were wounded. no U S personnel were injured.
Fire swept through the 100 year old two story home on Chapel Drive in North Sewickley Township Beaver County tearing through the structure. Mrs Boots was hospitalized after suffering shock and the cause was not determined by Chief Dale Sutherland. Firefighters from North Sewickley Wurtemburg Perry and Franklin battled the blaze amid collapse threats and smoke.
President Johnson lit an 80 foot spruce illuminated with thousands of lights in the ellipse behind the White House. He called Christmas a reminder that the first task is peace and urged an honorable settlement in Viet Nam. British Prime Minister Harold Wilson joined the ceremony pledging renewed peace efforts.
An estimated 28 million French voters go to the polls to decide if President Charles de Gaulle earns a second seven year term. Polls show about 55 percent for de Gaulle with a possible but unlikely defeat by Francois Mitterrand.
Rhodesia announced a temporary suspension of petroleum deliveries to Zambia as counteraction to Britain’s oil embargo on Ian Smith's government. Transport Minister George Rudland urged limited weekly gasoline and diesel deliveries and asked motorists to minimize travel while Britain and the United States press for sanctions and supply controls.
UPI report says North Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh may be willing to meet for talks without prior U.S. withdrawal. Italians who interviewed Ho reported readiness to start negotiations. Dean Rusk asked Amintore Fanfani to relay questions to Hanoi. U.S. officials say the ball is in Hanoi’s court.
The region stays largely cloudy today tonight and Sunday with occasional snow flurries mainly over higher terrain and intermittent light snow in the southern third tonight and Saturday. Highs reach 30 to 37, lows 27 to 33, with 0.01 inch of precipitation and prior year figures in parentheses.
