Victoria Cascino reports New Castle’s Main Street program winds down with only loose change left after paying salaries. The facade grant funded revamps across downtown but no remaining funds allow continuation. The program ends December 23 after a denied preservation grant and limited city support.
Browning-Ferris Industries of Ohio gains township approval to haul solid waste by rail through Mahoning Township to a Poland Ohio landfill. The agreement provides free residential trash pickup, initial rail-line support, and payments to the township for waste receipts and public safety costs, with conditions on liability and landfill participation. Construction starts soon with routes crossing U.S. 224 and Main Street Hillsville.
The New Castle Area School District will see a shortfall of more than 150000 in the 1992 93 budget after Gov Casey cut the state share of its 1072570 109… special education funding from 49 percent to about 41 percent. The district expects a new funding formula after the legislature recessed.
Israel ordered 418 Muslim fundamentalist activists from occupied lands deported to the Lebanese border. The Supreme Court stayed the order after protests by human rights groups who said the normal appeal process was bypassed. Palestinians slated for deportation are mostly Hamas members tied to recent violence against Israeli forces.
The forecast calls for daytime temperatures reaching the mid-30s with nighttime readings in the 30s range. Wind and precipitation chances not specified. Local residents should plan for cool conditions and fluctuating temperatures.
Country singer Merle Haggard filed Chapter 11 protection in Sacramento on Monday while his wife Theresa gave birth to son Binion Louis Haggard, his sixth child. Haggard, 55, said the move would allow him time to reassess finances without creditors pursuing him. His well known songs include Okie From Muskogee and Fightin Side of Me.
The New Castle Area Transit Authority debated a possible bus link to Pittsburgh International Airport. Board members Antonio and Guinaugh touted the idea as a convenience and potential commuter tie in with Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. A fare is not set yet, with estimated costs of 10 to 15 dollars depending on ridership, and final approval would require the Public Utility Commission and possibly the Beaver County Transit Authority and PAT before crossing jurisdictions.
