New York City faced 60 to 75 percent normal subway service as a motormen strike entered its eighth day. Direct losses reached 16.5 million dollars for the first week, with daily costs mounting. Mayor Wagner denounced the strike as illegal and vowed not to be blackmailed. The Motormen's Benevolent Association, with about 2,600 members, prepared to vote on the mayor's settlement proposal, while all transit workers voted for a bargaining representative, likely restoring Michael J. Quill's Transport Workers Union as sole representative for 35,000 subway workers.

Six persons were injured in five separate auto accidents over the weekend in the city, police report. First, Willard Miller age 36 and Max Mann age 19 collided at Falls and Jefferson streets. Frances Patterson and Catherine Miller sustained minor injuries. Second, Alfred Madison collided with a no parking sign and a pickup, no injuries reported.
A Sunday afternoon blaze tore through a ranch style home on Marlboro Avenue Union Township injuring Mack Brown and his family who were away visiting a sick grandmother. Firefighters contained the fire with aid from volunteers and insurance covered the damages. The Salvation Army provided immediate aid including mattresses blankets and clothing for six children and two adults who were left homeless.
Penn Power Co plans 11 million dollars in 1958 improvements for its district, announced by President Walter H. Sammis at the Yuletide dinner. Construction this year totaled 13 million, largely at the West Pittsburg plant, with 1,100 guests from Sharon Zelienople and New Castle.

Four Standard Brands Distributors employees faced warrants for Sunday work in defiance of Pennsylvania blue laws. Mayor Gardlock said warrants would be sworn out. manager Mitz Miller defended opening to compete with drugstores after a survey found 75 Sunday items.
In Philadelphia Olney, Thomas Frattone, 57, was held without bail after confessing to firing two shotgun blasts into his wife Gertrude Frattone, 67, during a quarrel over money. Police stated the shooting occurred in their home and Frattone surrendered to magistrate Harry J. Ellick.
Lawrence County delegates led by Assemblyman Donald W. Fox plan a second briefing before Youngstown City Council on a reciprocal wage tax with Ohio and Pennsylvania taxing bodies. Figures show 299 of 684 Pulaski Twp workers reside in Ohio, mainly Youngstown Campbell and Struthers, with others in Hubbard Girard Masury and Warren.
