United Nations soldiers opened fire on Egyptian attackers in Port Said after grenades and small arms targeted UN patrols. No casualties were reported as Cairo and British officials pledged investigations and Egypt moved to restore order with diplomatic protest and possible action.
Local residents report a large pink Santa Claus sighting in the Cleveland area while town notes urge residents to take driver tests next Tuesday. New Castle tests are paused for Christmas and New Year’s with no sessions next week.

Berlin based dispatch reports student unrest sweeping East Germany and other Soviet satellites now reaches Leningrad Russia. Tass says Lenin grad students face sharp criticism from the Communist Party central committee for making unhealthy statements. Central committee met in a special session and ordered that the students be taken in hand.
Prime Minister Anthony Eden began resuming official duties after a three week Jamaica rest. He affirmed Britain's Suez crisis stance as right and inevitable while internal and external critics pressed. R A Butler acted as prime minister during his absence.
A rapid rise in the tri state area has flooded rivers near Pittsburgh sweeping Gordon Ash Craft 57 of Wallace West Virginia to his death. The upper Monongahela is expected to crest near 24 feet at the point where it joins the Allegheny, delaying river traffic and closing the city wharf parking, three feet below 25 foot flood stage.
Dr. Kurt von Schuschnigg, once Austria’s chancellor ousted in 1938, took the oath of allegiance Friday in St Louis. On his 59th birthday he said he feels very fine and happy. He now teaches government at St Louis University, a post held since 1948.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles lands in Washington from Paris at 2 p.m. EST and will report to President Eisenhower that the Atlantic alliance breach has been substantially healed. The INS dispatch notes the return and forthcoming briefing.
Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru arrived in London amid criticism and is en route to Washington for talks with President Eisenhower. His plane landed here as part of his journey.
Egyptian raids near Port Said included five bomb and gunfire attacks on British forces between midnight and dawn. No British casualties were reported, but one Egyptian was killed and two wounded. Lt. Gen. Stockwell blamed fedayeen commandos for the incidents as tensions rise near the Anglo French pullout in the Suez Canal area.

UN force commander Col Carl Engholm said the Anglo French evacuation from Port Said was three to five days behind schedule due to French transport issues. General Douglas MacArthur warned that guided missiles and supersonic bombers will render overseas bases obsolete. The United States protested to Syria about delays in repairing a sabotaged oil pipeline six weeks after attacks aimed at aiding Egypt. Acting Secretary Herbert Hoover Jr. delivered the note to Ambassador Farid Zeineddine who promised to relay it to his government immediately.
Four young men were killed and two others were critically injured early today when their car lost control and crashed into the side of a south Toledo night club. The victims include Richard Naylor 25 Monclova Forest Lee 20 Perrysburg Willis Wittys 23 and William Jacobs 21 Waterville. Alfred Martin 21 and Richard Hillfinger 25 Waterville were in critical condition at Maumee Valley hospital. Two club occupants suffered minor injuries as the car demolished two walls of the showboat venue.
President Eisenhower will address Congress in person on January 10 delivering the State of the Union message. James C. Hagerty announced from Washington that the address will be delivered before both houses.
