President Truman met with bipartisan congressional leaders at the White House to outline a broader atomic weapons program and discuss expanding mobilization controls. The talks also covered a potential national emergency declaration and how far the government should go in restricting the economy.
Local residents are reminded that winter officially arrives at 5 14 a m next Friday morning December 22. Pa Newe notes the arrival and jokes about greeting the season. Local Boards 86 and 87 publish the names of men summoned for induction Friday morning. They are to assemble at 6:45 at the West Side station of the Pennsylvania Railroad for check, gifts, and transport. Roach.
British Prime Minister Attlee urged that Chinese representation in the United Nations be assigned to the current government of China. Speaking in the Commons after talks with President Truman, he said entry would have been achieved if the Korean crisis had not intervened, and expressed confidence in Gen Douglas MacArthur to hold Korea.
The Army said it will seek contempt citations against the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen if the unauthorized walkout in Chicago yards continues. Assistant Army Secretary Bennetsen warned the group to comply with the federal court order. Meanwhile Washington yard workers joined the strike, crippling freight and passenger service on seven railroads.
The Post Office Department warned that a wildcat railroad strike could require an embargo on Christmas parcel post. Assistant Postmaster General John M. Redding said the walkout crippled U S mail distribution by tying up St. Louis Chicago and Washington terminals and delaying transcontinental and north south mail. A decision was expected late today. the embargo would only take effect if absolutely necessary.
William Carver aged 24 of 1060 Carnegie street Akron Ohio suffered a fracture of the first lumbar vertebra while operating a tractor trailer hauling freight near Rose Point on route 422 at 11 45 p m Wednesday. Police report his condition is good today. The tractor trailer was not damaged and was towed to a Butler avenue garage. The vehicle is owned by Zeno Trucking company of Ohio.
The United Nations Assembly backed a 13-nation Asian bloc plan to authorize a three member committee under President Nasrallah Entezam to pursue a cease-fire with Communist China in Korea. The vote followed Russia’s rejection of a peace terms outline and included 51 to 5 support with China abstaining.
Congress plans an early revision of the draft to reach about three million armed forces by next July. House Armed Services Chairman Vinson said the committee will act immediately in January to address a manpower gap amid Secretary Marshall’s testimony on Truman’s request for 18 billion dollars and talk of universal military training up to 30 months for 18 year olds.
Gene Schweinsberg director of streets today submitted to Mayor John S Haven the total snow removal cost. The amount is 45 824 09 with equipment costing 43 571 13 and labor 2 247 96. County commissioners have agreed to share the cost and will receive a full report.
Defense Secretary Marshall told a secret House committee he does not favor full scale war mobilization now. He said there is a hope that all out war with the Soviet Union can still be averted and that it is very hard to answer if the nation will be in an all out shooting war in the next few months.

After the January 1 break in U S Britain economic cooperation, Connally signals cuts elsewhere as European economies improve. McClellan seeks end of European Recovery Program by June 30, while urging continued military assistance.
The New Castle School Board did not decide on how to recover snow day losses. Superintendent Frank L Burton said the state had not taken a stand. Proposals included cancelling Easter vacation to make up time and shifting two days from Easter to add three days in June. The issue will be revisited.

Keith Bumstead a 36 year old lumber plant employee in Meaford Ont walked to the first aid room with a five foot board protruding from his head after a razor edged six foot strip of hardwood pierced his scalp. He had the wood sawed off near his temple and was taken to Owen Sound hospital for removal of the remainder. His condition was listed as favorable. Bids on state projects total 314067 as part of a 1 million building program at Pennsylvania State College with utility line extensions and additions to existing GSA buildings.
Obituaries record the deaths of William Joseph McFadden 13 Ellwood City, Florence Nancy Davidson 87 Wampum, and Raymond Moses 26 Erie Pa with brief identifiers and ages.
American forces blew bridges between Hamhung and Sudong to delay a Red assault while Fourth Fleet jets repelled 24 Russian-type aircraft in a clash over northwest Korea. In the far northeast Chinese troops pressed toward the 38th parallel as UN leaders warned of a fifth column inside lines and massed enemy air activity.
