Fire at Washington post office injures many firefighters as smoke overcomes crews. Investigation to determine if arson started the blaze. Firemen battled flames through the building as authorities examine possible incendiary causes.
The New Castle city council voted four to one to discharge the police civil service board amid a dispute over eligibility lists. Mayor Mayne led the action, with Councilman D. O. Davies opposing. The board, composed of Dr. L. W. Wilson, Professor F. L. Orth, and J. Lee McFate, had served without pay while supplying lists for police and fire appointments.
Westminster College faces a mass student strike after basketball star Paul Backus was ruled ineligible due to probation. About 600 students rallied at the New Wilmington campus in a blizzard, demanding reconsideration while administrators held talks with student leaders.
After eight and a half hours of intense activity firefighters stopped pouring water into a sixth floor post office room containing vast filing cabinets. The fire broke out at midnight in a windowless 200 foot semicircular archive area filled with government records and dense smoke. Many firefighters were overcome and rushed to emergency hospitals as crews ventilated the space and pumped water at high volume.
A Pa Newc report notes a detective saw two pansies blooming at Mrs. A P Swearer 115 West Madison. Reniker of State Street and Herman Gilbert of King Avenue just returned from a hunting trip with a 6 point buck and a 4 point buck. U S weather stats for the 24 hour period ending at 9 this morning show a maximum of 42 and a minimum of 29 with .34 inches of precipitation and a river stage of 6.3 feet. A year ago for the same date the maximum was 33 and the minimum 17 with trace precipitation.
Emperor Haile Selassie sends a note to the League of Nations, seemingly rejecting the Hoare Laval peace proposals to place responsibility on the league. Later Anthony Eden signals Britain will escalate sanctions against Italy if the peace overture fails.
J W Anderson, instructor at the Senior high school, was elected president of the New Castle branch of the Pennsylvania State Education Association at a meeting in the high school auditorium. Officers include Miss Mary Scherger as vice president and George Hockenberry as treasurer with auditors William Wallace and Peter Grittie.
J A Gilland of Burgettstown reported to police at 9 p m Thursday that his car collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Highland and Lincoln avenues.

The court of appeals sustained special commissioner Rush H. Limbaugh who ruled the infant boy was the son of Anna Ware a 19 year old unwed mother from Newton Pennsylvania and not of Nellie Tipton Muench wife of a physician. The three judges unanimously accepted the report.
The 63rd annual Pennsylvania State Grange convention ends in New Castle after three days of intensive activity. Delegates praise the event as highly successful with excellent arrangements and facilities. Charles Creasy of Columbia county is re-elected to the executive committee for a three-year term. Walter Hoppe of Susquehanna is among other election results.
Two men were killed and two others seriously injured in a head on crash on the Conneaut Albion road. Charles Rogers and Jesse Pauner, both of Albion, died. Henry Matchings and Lawrence Rogers were hurt. All were returning from a party.
Ray Jutila a 21 year old Warren athlete on trial for first degree murder slashed his wrists with a sharpened spoon in his jail cell. He was rushed to City hospital and doctors said he would recover. He intended to kill himself and the blood loss was heavy before deputies intervened.
Delegates debated the Japanese plan for a common upper limit on naval strength at the London naval conference. The discussions paused as the conference adjourned until Monday with opposition from most capitals, though Tokyo supported the idea. The notice refuted earlier reports that the plan had been rejected.
Victor S. Koussow, a handyman at Columbia University Medical Centre, killed Dr. Arthur Rowe and Dr. Paul Wiberg and wounded Dr. William Crawford before killing himself. Police say his paranoia and harsh memories of the Russian Revolution driven by a persecution complex led to the attack.

Sixteen year old Jack Ciemingo and 26 year old George Hildebrand received a stay of execution from the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals pending appeal. They were scheduled for electric chair in January for killing Herman Eiler during an attempted robbery at his farm.
Death records report Henry L. Mortimer, age 64, of 1330 East Washington Street. Fred Kimmich, 73, of North Sewickley Township. and Charles E. Phipps, listed as Cleveland with the age not specified.
