In a clash along a 12 mile front between Gergesa and Bethsaida Israeli forces attacked Syrian artillery positions by Sea of Galilee. Official figures report over 50 Syrians killed and 30 captured while Israel lists four dead and 12 wounded. The raid followed Syrian bombardments of Jewish fishing boats.
Local residents begin the final two weeks of holiday shopping with three evening shopping nights this week. Snowy roads were mostly clear and ice spots were treated, while secondary roads remained tricky. Hunters crowd the woods today and tomorrow in pursuit of a buck and doe, with Lawrence County responders among the many out. Alfred Rausch returns to Lawrence County after hunting out of town and shoots a ten point deer weighing about 140 pounds.

A Martinsburg West Virginia family of eight suffered four deaths when their car failed to stop at an intersection and was struck by a car driven by Lewis Gaver of Myersville Maryland. The Bowman vehicle was then driven into the path of a tractor trailer. Mrs Helen Bowman 33 and her children Chester 13 Alice 10 and John 16 months died. Bowmans Warren Senior Dwight 4 Warren Junior 3 and Shirley 8 were hospitalized. A passenger Robert Harshman 25 of Myersville was injured. Gaver and the tractor driver John M Ruion of Springfield Ohio escaped injury.
East German Communists order riot squads to demonstrate in Western sectors of Berlin signaling growing sovereignty. They claim a Stahlhelm veterans meeting in a French sector cafe, despite the owner denying any gathering, will be dispersed. West German police brace for border clashes after past invasions and arrests. The report notes prior May attacks left 68 Communists arrested and multiple injuries.
Snow and ice glazed state highways as traffic accidents killed at least 10 people weekend. Reports say northwestern areas and Philadelphia area roads were especially dangerous with icy stretches on the Turnpike and along the northeastern extension from Allegheny Valley Interchange to Allegheny Tunnel.

Drive chairman Robert Reiber reports improved response to the Junior Chamber of Commerce fund drive for needy children though still short of the $350 goal by deadline Wednesday. The plan to provide spending money for 40 Lawrence County children and a Christmas shopping tour was affected as the target was abandoned.
The weather bureau says a wintry chill will continue in Pennsylvania today and Tuesday as Canadian air pushes across the state. Northwest winds ease to milder by Tuesday afternoon. Lows run 17 to 24 degrees, with light snow flurries in the west and north central regions.
Ralph Freschcorn of Struthers drove the car that struck a horse and buggy driven by Jonathan C. Byler of Volant R D 3 at 5 15 p m Sunday. The buggy was demolished and the horse killed while the driver was unhurt. The incident occurred on route 278 between New Wilmington and Volant as Freschcorn attempted to pass a car approaching from the opposite direction. State Police report.
In Pittsburgh talks resume between Westinghouse and the International Union of Electrical Workers with no sign of change. A clergy committee from Sharon will meet management and union reps to discuss strike issues, which began October 17. Mercer Sheriff complains to the governor about vandalism, while no state police deployment is planned. Nationwide 44,000 workers at 29 plants are on strike for higher wages.
United Press reports desert winds created a hot spell in Los Angeles with 77 degrees while the rest of the country faced cold snaps and heavy snow. Grantsburg Wisconsin recorded 15 below zero, Syracuse New York logged nine inches of snow, and Utica New York saw four inches as plains and midwest remained cold.
Lewis J. Fletcher 42 and James Talbert 21 died from severe head injuries after their car collided with a second vehicle driven by Raymond Johnson at the Walmo intersection on Route 18. Betty Mae Fletcher 33 and five Johnson passengers were treated for injuries at Jameson Memorial Hospital.
Four people died in an early morning house fire in Earlington Kentucky. Neighbors identified the victims as Willard Fox 46 his wife Beatrice 42 and their two grandchildren Kayla Rogers 5 and Stevie Rogers 4.
