County escapes biggest snowfalls

A slow moving winter storm hit western Pennsylvania with Lawrence County receiving five to six inches while neighboring counties had more than 10 inches. An additional three to five inches were possible for Youngstown area today but unlikely. Schools in Ellwood Area were closed and Laurel and Wilmington districts had two hour delays. Local PennDOT crews worked from 4 a.m. to noon yesterday with continued salting today. Shovels sold out at George True Value Hardware as heavy wet snow burdened roads.

County budget calls for three day pay cut in 1993

County commissioners unveiled a 1993 spending plan totaling 44.99 million with a three day unpaid leave for all employees during Thanksgiving or Christmas week to help balance the budget. Officials also seek layoffs for part time staff, halt overtime, and deny raises to department heads and elected officials to avoid tax increases. A $107000 computer purchase was eliminated and the plan aimed to trim 7 percent from department budgets as a first step.

Resident pushes private garbage haul plan in city hall

Former city council president Frank Banfield returned to city hall to press for progress on long term garbage collection. He argued a private hauler could save about 500000 by eliminating city layoffs and cutting costs, noting pay by bag reduced landfill dues by 25 percent. He said he supported private hauling buttime to study was insufficient previously.

Judge rejects Sharon Steel reopening plan

A bankruptcy judge forced Sharon Steel to revise its plan to reopen its largest Farrell mill in Mercer County. The judge noted missing pension and bank debt, warning the company may not be viable. A one year operating plan may be drafted by December 21.

Wayans exits Fox deal over In Living Color censorship

Kee nan Ivory Wayans reportedly ends his exclusive television and feature pact with 20th Century Fox over censorship of In Living Color and the plan to air first season reruns without his input. A Fox spokesperson said there is no ill will. Wayans agreed to the deal in November 1990 and will also drop his producing role on the show.
