Democratic leader referees party bout in Memphis
North Texas born John White, who chairs the Democratic National Committee, presided over leadership meetings ahead of the 1978 mini convention in Memphis. He helped broker a compromise with Rep. Donald Fraser on rules for the 1980 nominating process, leaving only a dispute over whether a constitutional majority of 813 delegates is needed to approve motions. Cringle’s New York ally backed Fraser but lost on the executive committee, and the issue may rise on the convention floor Sunday.
