Spaniards approve new constitution in referendum
Spain voted to end Franco era rules and embrace a parliamentary monarchy. Yes votes about 87.8 percent, no about 7.9, with one third abstaining due to rain, apathy, and Basque opposition. King Juan Carlos and Adolfo Suarez led the transition as voters approved a 169 article charter separating church and state, broadening regional autonomy, and allowing civil divorce.
