New Castle city council granted permission to use the council chamber for Sunday school inquiries by B'nai B'rith Sunday school. About 130 children attend classes. Clendenin hall deemed unsafe, temporary quarters requested. Janitor services to be paid by the Sunday school.
Bethany Lutheran church on East Washington street is free of all debt after burning the mortgage and notes totaling 3600 dollars during Sunday evening services. The congregation attended as Rev. H. E. Harman led the service and Dr. Bittle delivered the sermon. Special music highlighted the day.

The New Castle Lodge B P O E held memorial services Sunday afternoon at the Opera House with a large crowd in attendance. Exalted ruler Co L Horner presided while A Martin Graham Dr R G Roscamp and John R Geyer of Harrisburg spoke on the program. decorations were simple and appropriate.
The Rae Muirhead Business Girls Bazaar ran three days drawing large crowds and is expected to raise about 150 dollars after most items were sold. Mrs. Rachel Reet of East Washington Street returned from a visit with friends in Cleveland.
Obituaries list Jonathan R. Simon age 80 of Mahoning Two and Mrs J S Burgess age 78 of Youngstown along with Ralph Reynolds age 25 of 760 Lathrop Street and Mrs Samuel Williams age 38 of 705 Croton Avenue. Also noted is Mrs Kate McGonigie age 70 of Meadstead Pan oe.
Paris dispatch reports Allied forces pushing the German line in four zones, with French and British troops narrowing trenches to exchange hand grenades. Ground gained south of Dixmude on the Yser canal and north of Cambrin between Bethune and La Bassée aided by heavy artillery.
Mary Humphries and her husband arrived in New Castle ending a two month trek from Mercer toward New York City to San Francisco. She travels in hiking attire with a revolver, writes for a New York magazine, and plans moves to Youngstown Cincinnati Memphis then California. The pair faced wartime disruptions in Europe and had to surrender luggage and a dog to officials.

A 36 foot pole with a 10 inch copper globe was installed after local craftsmen and Carnegie Steel workers provided pipes fittings and erection services. Ralph Gilliland grounded the pole and electrical work completed the project.
President Wilson declares formal opposition to Representative Gardner's proposed army and navy preparedness inquiries after a White House conference. He cites concerns the inquiry method would be unwise and could create unfavorable international impressions.
