United Press reports from Fairmont West Virginia indicate a mine explosion death toll may reach about 558 with 100 bodies prepared for extraction. Officials had initially undercounted, but fear more bodies remain inside as rescuers contend with frantic crowds and a dangerous fire halted earlier progress.
Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral Friday afternoon for Oliver E. Sankey of 175 East North Street who died at the hospital Wednesday from a personal safety related bullet wound. Rev. James M. Ferguson presided with Rev. Higley assisting. Interment was at Greenwood cemetery with pallbearers George Jones Archie Fleming Hazelton Moore Hugh Shields Frank Walters and H. J. Henderson.
Ralph Snyder, 14, son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Snyder of Ray and Chestnut streets, had necrosis in his left foot and underwent amputation about four inches below the knee at his home Friday. He is resting easy and friends hope for a speedy recovery.
Robert W. McFate longtime New Castle resident died peacefully Friday night at his home on 124 Neshannock avenue after a protracted illness. Born April 12 1834 in Venango county he married Hulda J. Ricketts in 1865 and had four children. Funeral services set for Monday at 2 30 PM at the residence with interment at Oak Park. survivors include his wife three children and four brothers.
The Rosina furnace of Carnegie Steel Co. is closed for repairs today. It employs about 100 men and will resume operations within a short time.
Cebury Perkins 88 a longtime copper worker and oldest Mason in the county was found dead in his bed in the Richardson block by his son L W Perkins. Born 1819 in Tunton Massachusetts he moved to New Castle in 1848 and lived alone since his wife’s death 30 years ago. Survived by son Lloyd Perkins Rochester PA daughter Mrs John Baker Pittsburg and another son L W Perkins. Funeral from 64 South Lee Avenue Tuesday at 2:30 PM with interment Greenwood Cemetery.
A grand Elks event in New Castle features John K Tener of Charleroi grand exalted ruler of Pennsylvania and several grand lodge officers visiting next Wednesday. The program includes a reception at hotels, an official lodge meeting, and a lavish banquet with local officers to host visiting dignitaries from Beaver Falls Sharon Greenville Youngstown Pittsburg and Allegheny lodges.
John Thomas a Perry township farmer and his daughter Blanche were bound and gagged by two masked robbers who ransacked the house until neighbor Scott Guy arrived fired at them with a shotgun and forced their escape. Thomas and Blanche were found tied to chairs with mouths gagged and eyes bandaged. The robbers fled toward the back door leaving no clues, and authorities link them to a local gang active around Ellwood City.
John McGowan a brick mason at Republic Rubber plant Youngstown fell from a scaffold Friday and was taken to the hospital with severe bruises over most of his body. No bones were broken and injuries are not considered serious.
Rev J S Martin pastor of the Re formed Presbyterian church says he has not yet decided about accepting the secretaryship of the National Re formed association. His son is critically ill and he is caring for him. The Christian and Missionary alliance dedicates a new gospel tabernacle this Sunday at 2 30 pm with Rev Henry B Wilson D D of New York delivering the dedicatory address.
An itch outbreak at the North Cedar street school in the Seventh ward prompts possible full closure. Teachers quickly identified the illness across grades and sent home affected pupils, with 12 children dismissed by Miss McMillin and others by department.
Special music is planned for the Young Women's Christian Association vesper service at Central Presbyterian Church Sunday at 4 o clock. Mrs Felch will sing a solo and the Misses Lewis will perform a duet. Rev D M Cleland is the speaker.
A habeas corpus hearing before Judge Porter revealed William Schott wed Bertha Rosen in New York on August 21, 1893, while Bertha was about 13. Ohio law required 14 for marriage, prompting Rosen’s attorney to file annulment, with a January hearing likely. Schott did not attend the session.
Robert Burns a veteran railroad engineer from the Seventh ward died Saturday afternoon at his West Madison avenue home after a three week illness and a paralytic stroke. He formerly worked for the Pittsburg and Western and most recently at Hillsville quarries as a stationary engineer. He belonged to Mt Jackson lodge of the Knights of Pythias and is survived by his wife and 16 year old daughter.
The Sixth Ward hose company held its first meeting in 31 months to elect officers. Joseph McCormick was elected president Theodore G Tyler vice president William McDonald secretary T J McClusky district chief and delegates to the general department T J McClusky Samuel Smith and James Trax with Co C Fulkerson named to relief. Joseph Johns appointed foreman and assistant foreman with L H Smith. A banquet is planned for next month with turkey as the centerpiece.
In Warren Ohio on December 7 jurors weighing whether Alfred Kinsman should stand trial for murder of Dr George Birrel or be committed to an asylum reported they could not agree. They asked for instructions and were excused for the night.
There is little change in Andrew Hutton's condition as he lies unconscious since Wednesday. He appears to be gradually sinking with congestion nearly gone from the lungs but now faces other infirmities.
Dr. W. H. Crawford president of Allegheny College visited the city Saturday hosted by Rev. and Mrs. E. E. Higley. He planned to travel to Pittsburgh later to preach Sunday.
Frank Stevens a well known merchant tailor and active in education is prominently mentioned as a candidate for school controller in the Sixth ward. He is described as a careful business man who will make a strong candidate.
Friday marked St Nickola s day with religious services at St Vitus church during the day and fireworks in the evening. Nickola is noted as one of the Italians most illustrious saints.
The county commissioners refuse to file Socialist party petitions under the Uniform Primary act for New Castle citing that the act covers all parties and not a single one. Socialists decide to seek legal action to keep their party name on the ballot and may retain an attorney to challenge the ruling in court.
Charles Connors remains jailed on an alderman charged information for entering Reynolds house and stealing two coats. He and Mike Connors were arrested in the fifth ward by Officer Eb erle while trying to dispose of the coats at Steve Harris store. Charley was discharged by the mayor. Mike held for March term.
Miss Rose A. Law age 65 died Saturday morning at 10 at her home 140 South Beaver street after a general breakdown in health. She was the daughter of Newton Law of Beaver county and had lived in the city for many years. She is survived by two sisters Mrs John A. Weir and Mrs G B Walsh and a brother Samuel Law of 138 South Beaver street. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the residence with burial at Greenwood cemetery.
Three readers of the Examiner are reported to have been called down by C E Mehard on Friday in a brief town note. Details are scarce in the clippings.
A Pittsburg man claiming to represent the United States district attorney was barred from questioning naturalization applicants after Judge Porter demanded proper proof of citizenship and bar status. Eight applicants were approved after thorough examinations of government knowledge.

McFate 73 of 124 Ne Shannock Avenue. Rose A. Law 635, Rose Perkins 88 of Richardson Block, and Mrs. Mary E. Porter 72 of Ellwood West Madison Avenue with associates including Robert Burns.
