Sailor recalls lifting FDR aboard USS Iowa during World War II

Sicard, a crew member, says Roosevelt weighed over 200 pounds and required a special wheelchair lift. He alleges he later injured himself and was treated for a hernia aboard, with medical records later said to be lost. He notes press and records were tightly controlled by Roosevelt and officials.

Memories of USS Iowa and FDR links haunt Leo Sicard

Leo Sicard recalls his days aboard the USS Iowa during World War II. He wears a 1943 scar from helping to lift President Roosevelt aboard in December 1943. His souvenirs include signal flags, teakwood deck pieces, a 22 millimeter shell, ice cream spoons from FDR, and photographs. He served as an aide to the captain and preserves papers tied to the ship’s 1943 Maine grounding and wartime drills. He hopes to return relics to the Iowa, now a floating museum in Los Angeles, but funds are lacking for the December 9 commemorative visit.
