A Mahoning Township supervisor plans to install truck scales at the municipal building parking lot on U.S. 224 to curb overloaded trucks. Residents oppose due to space, safety, and noise concerns near the park, pool, and homes. Murders rise nationwide but fall in New Castle area

FBI data show U S murder rate up more than 2 percent in 1993 with an average murder every 21 minutes nationwide. In New Castle three homicides in 1993, two in 1992, one in 1994, and a 27.3 percent clearance rate in 1993 rising to 32.1 percent in six months of 1994. Chief Charles Abraham credits officers for higher clearances and notes comparisons to larger cities mislead given small base figures.
