Allied forces under Gen. MacArthur report Japanese troops landed at Milne Bay have been routed and driven into the sea. Ground fighting continues but the initiative rests with Australian and American defenders as ships withdraw.
American press correspondents were escorted to a battle line near Rzhev West of Moscow to witness General Grant tanks in action under U S air cover. The visit highlighted American equipment and the scale of support in the fighting near the front.
Soviet armies began a counter-offensive in the Kletskaya area northwest of Stalingrad while holding other lines around the Volga city. The Red Army reported four troops engaged and advancing as the tide of battle turned in Russia with repeated German assaults repelled west and northwest of Moscow.

A Baltimore and Ohio freight train powered by a Diesel engine will pass New Castle Junction tonight between 8:30 and 9 o clock marking the first regular diesel powered freight run on the line. The train, 100 cars of oil, is hauled west to east, with officials confirming the schedule.
Gypsy Rose Lee the strip tease queen and Alexander Kirkland of Junior Miss were married at Gypsy's Highland Mills New York home. The ceremony was performed by Congregational minister Rev J Arthur Lazelle at the stroke of midnight.
In Mansfield Massachusetts a car collided with a New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad train killing two women and a man. Patricia M Cook 22 and Margaret Verdi 21, both of Mansfield, and Leonard T Comeau 24 formerly of Norfolk, were pronounced dead with another man seriously injured.
American bomber squadrons hit Japanese landing positions around Milne Bay and Buna while pursuing ships strafed a Japanese airfield. Captain Jack Wilson led bombers and pursuit planes in a fast pass over Buna, destroying a grounded fighter and a bomber, then returning to strike Milne Bay targets. Captain Fred Eaton conducted a reconnaissance mission amid a Japanese Zero engagement.
President Roosevelt will speak this afternoon via national networks to honor the navy medical and surgery bureau centennial and dedicate the new naval medical center near Washington. The address, described as a fighting message, will reach armed forces worldwide and precede two further broadcasts in early September detailing wartime education and price controls.
Five construction workers died when a scaffold collapsed inside a large water cooler tower at the Lake Ontario Ordnance Plant near Youngstown New York. County schools started early this year with sessions resuming in rural schools and bells calling pupils to study. The new term aims to finish earlier in spring for defense tasks on the farm and includes opening of several new buildings in Neshanock township with additional rooms at Walmonk.
Aug 31 The Pittsburgh Hotels Association representing seven large Pittsburgh establishments denied government plans to seize hotels for military use. The group said no hotel was approached and there is no apparent basis for the reports.
Major General Edward Martin arrives for a Cascade Park rally in New Castle. Candidates including Joseph Stadtfeld William Livengood Louise Graham James Brice W Sharp Fullerton attend with M Harvey Taylor detained. Rally begins 3 pm with corn roast at 5 and speeches at 7.

City firemen were called out twice on Sunday evening for small blazes. At 5 30 a motor in the refrigerating system of the A M Market at 102 West Long Avenue burned out an alarm from Box 35. About $25 damage. Later Seventh Ward firefighters responded to 237 South Cedar Street where a mattress caught fire from someone smoking in bed causing about $10 damage.
