The piece notes September 17 voting in New Castle and Lawrence County limited to registered voters. It warns nonregistered residents will be sidelined from elections and highlights Wednesday August 28 as the final registration day for New Castle, with ten year permanent registration thereafter.
Voters can register by simply walking in and answering questions with no tax receipts required, except newcomers may need naturalization papers. Registration has been encouraging with many new voters daily. most come from wards other than the second third and fourth. Wednesday is the final registration day though no law forces participation and a defeat may leave one with little to say the morning after the election.
The Senate adjourned at midnight after a five and a half hour filibuster by Huey Long. The aim was passage of the third deficiency bill for social security and related measures, but Long blocked action with forceful, pointed speeches.
Daniel Burdick a Chewton youth has nearly completed a single seat high wing Storm Training Monoplane powered by a Model A Ford engine. With a 31 foot wingspan it may be the largest single place plane in the country and could test flight in early September. Construction started on a Mount Jackson area farm and moves to Chewton for completion.
State Police in charge of investigation say no trace of the killers since they stole the steering wheel from the slain Frank L. Blumquist's auto a week ago. The murder occurred on August 19 on a Pinchot road from Portersville to Moore's Corners, and the suspects fled in Blumquist's car wrecking it at Harmony. Police questioned Blumquist friends and Mrs. Blumquist identified papers found at the station.
Local residents miss the new diesel engine on a test run last week but see it again this morning as it heads west. The manufacturer tests engines before delivery to owners. Tomorrow marks the final day for permanent New Castle voter registration, with expectations of a record turnout. J O Rodgers of Winter avenue grows tomato vines nine feet tall, trimmed from a stepladder. A family on Washington street witnessed five or six fire engines racing to a nearby alarm.
Cab Calloway and his orchestra were performing at Idora Park when thieves broke into his car and stole 1640 dollars intended for payroll. Police investigated the robbery as a theft from the vehicle.
U S weather statistics show for the 24 hour period ending 9 this morning a high of 86 and a low of 67 with trace precipitation and river stage at 4.4 feet. Year earlier the date recorded 79 high and 48 low with no precipitation.
Reports from London say Italy may search and seize foreign shipping trespassing in the war zone if hostilities with Ethiopia begin. Britain plans a Franco British front as the League of Nations Council meets at Geneva on September 4.
Moscow reports say the Soviet government bluntly rejected the U S protest and alleged subversive activity by the Communist International. The Kremlin announced it has never assumed obligations regarding the organization after dispatching Britain Italy and Latvia protests tied to seventh congress speeches.
The National Security Association halted all further subscriptions at 1 30 pm today to cover funeral expenses for Frank L Blumquist who was murdered near Portersville. Submissions after this time may be brought to The News. A report will be carried by The News on Wednesday.
Pittsburgh August 27. Justice of the Peace James J Westwood and constable Tim Drexler were jailed in McKees Rocks charged with the murder of Martha Westwood, wife of the Squire, July 10. Detectives Monaghan and Matsey led weeks of inquiry. Westwood claimed he would face the case. The pair reportedly fled prior to arrest. Continued on Page Two.
Dauphin county court upholds Attorney General Margiotti ruling that parties may nominate only one candidate for the supreme court in the upcoming primary. Judge Musmanno's mandamus plea to force county officials to allow two nominees was rejected. Two justices to be elected in November. voters may cast one vote for the high bench.
Addis Ababa reports an Italian plane disguised as Ethiopian craft was shot down by Ethiopian troops on Ethiopian soil last night. Two Italian aviators were wounded and taken to Harrar as prisoners. the aircraft allegedly bore Ethiopian colors. The incident occurred in Somaliland amid boundary disagreements.
Chicago August reports evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson denying rumors of romance with Homer Rodeheaver. She said she has no plans for remarriage at this time.
William Mahan sought as the Weyerhaeuser kidnapping mastermind was reportedly arrested in Helena with a companion. Police and Bureau of Identification agents planned to verify identity, checking a hotel registration tip and coordinating with Butte officials to confirm whether the suspect matches Mahan's description.
The AAA and TVA, key Roosevelt program pillars, reached the Supreme Court for constitutional tests. The government filed an appeal in Hoosac Mills on cotton processing taxes after a 2 to 1 circuit court ruling. Comptroller General McCarl will be a key participant in the 3:30 p m meeting as the administration seeks funds to advance the social security program and other matters.
Mrs. W G Wilkins of New Castle was re-elected president of Lawrence County WCTU at the county convention in the Second United Presbyterian church. She will serve a third term. Officers re-elected include Vice President Mrs Margaret McClure and Corresponding Secretary Mrs Ida Mae Allison. Forty five women attended from across the county.
Funeral services for Carmen Andrew Domenick were held at St. Lucy's church at 10 with Father Ippolito presiding. Domenick fatally injured Sunday when struck by a car driven by his niece Eva Moran. Moran and her husband were still missing per police. Columbus Society members attended in a body. pallbearers named.
Theodore William Carr aged 21 of Volant, R F D No 3 is listed as deceased in an obituary notice. Details on date and cause are not provided in the fragment.
City dog catcher at 258 West Falls Street sustained injuries last Friday when bitten by a dog while performing duties. The incident occurred as the officer carried out routine work within city limits.
