Lewis Declares Only Operators Can Avert Strike
John L. Lewis warns that a coal strike is inevitable unless anthracite operators retract their hard line on mine costs. After a two hour Bellevue Stratford Hotel meeting with John H. Uhl and Ralph A. Amerman, Lewis says no strike order will be issued today if operators withdraw their stated refusals to negotiate. The ultimatum centers on whether operators will move to negotiations and avert action by United Mine Workers members.

U S Officials See Stumbling Block To Debt
Washington officials viewed the Anglo French debt funding agreement as a potential obstacle in settling France’s $4 billion debt to the United States. The London accord was seen as France trying to scale down its obligations rather than pay England, and its limited terms over 62 years for interest only were not considered a valid basis for Franco American negotiations.
