President Truman said the nationwide railroad strike call at 6 AM Monday surprised him and contradicted union assurances they would not strike. He gave no early decision on seizing railroads and planned further study before making a statement.

In Tokyo Adm. Forrest P. Sherman, Chief of Naval Operations, expressed optimism about the Korean crisis and reported the U S Far East naval force at about 150 vessels with 90 000 personnel, double the strength two months earlier. Gen. Lawton Collins echoed confidence on return to Tokyo though cautioned against quick victory.
The bloodstained handkerchief found on 23-year-old WAVE Ann Victoria Barrett may hold clues to her death in a lagoon near the Philadelphia naval base. Autopsy will determine if drowning or injury occurred and whether foul play was involved. The Navy clerk vanished after leaving a tavern with three WAVES who recall she planned to lie down in a car.
Harrisburg Aug 24 Officials of the Pennsylvania turnpike plan stricter controls on reckless driving and speeding as safety measures ahead of the eastern extension opening October 1. Twenty one state troopers patrol the 160 mile stretch from Irwin to Middlesex with expected augmentation when the Middlesex to King of Prussia segment opens.
Named principal of West Side and Thaddeus-Stevens elementary schools in New Castle. He succeeds S. Glenn McCracken, now principal at Highland and Arthur McGill schools. Vacancy created when Dr. Joseph Hartman became superintendent at Greenville. Mr. Wallace has taught in the New Castle system for 16 years.
Ottawa reports more than 300000 workers idle as nationwide railroad strike enters its third day. Voluntary food rationing appears in some regions as supply lines falter and cities feel little impact while remote areas face shortages and merchant rationing. Parliament scheduled to debate crisis and possible government seizure of the two major railways.
Twenty Eighth Division officers led by Maj. Gen. Daniel B. Strickler completed a tour of Camp Atterbury Indiana where the unit will train for federal service. The Public Information Officer said the camp has recreation facilities a library post exchanges theatres and chapels. Local realtors and chamber officials noted housing for families will be minimal.
The House Appropriations committee approved an additional 16.7 billion dollars to prosecute the Korean War and strengthen Western defenses. Over El Mirage Dry Lake near Victorville California two B 26 medium bombers collided during night training killing both pilots one crewman was seriously injured and another is missing. The two planes belonged to the 452nd Bomb Squadron based at Georgia Air Force Base and had been recently activated.
Frank Emery of the International News Service and Randolph Churchill, son of Britain's wartime prime minister, were added to the casualties list in Korea. Emery endured minor shell splinter wounds during a night foray. Churchill suffered a possible fractured left leg but kept joking with reporters.
Five Communist divisions amounting to about fifty thousand men were said to be shifting northeastward on the Korean front toward a possible new offensive. South Korean sources noted general enemy movement along the Taegu sector with small groups moving from the U S First Cavalry area. Reconnaissance showed massing near Sinnyong or Pohang as UN counterattacks followed Red infilstrations north of Taegu.
Tokyo reports B-29s dropped 145 tons of high explosives on Hungnam chemical plants and attacked targets along the east coast. F-80 fighters engaged troops near Masan as allied planes pressed a 60th day of air strikes to disrupt reinforcements and supplies.
New Castle Senior high school appoints a new director of band and orchestra, succeeding Joseph Replogle who resigned for a Tampa Florida position. Mr Keen comes from the University of Pennsylvania where he is pursuing his doctorate and has taught at Clifford Emporium Sonestown and Downingtown.
Two Armstrong Cork company plants in Pittsburgh district closed as workers walk out over wages. About 400 employees at the Beaver Falls plant joined 500 workers at the Pittsburgh plant, who had quit the day before.
Ground breaking underway for Westminster College field house costing about 215000 dollars. The brick and steel structure aims to be ready by the basketball season opener on December 9 with completion dependent on steel deliveries. The 12 acre recreation site will later hold a football field baseball field track and large parking areas. Viclinteer of New Wilmington has the contract and Macomber Steel Co. provides steel.
Washington news reports the Senate begins debate on a five billion dollar tax increase to fund the Korean War and boost national preparedness. Senate Finance Chairman George Ga. argues for the committee bill while Sen. O Mahoney Wyo grows support for an excess profits amendment. A leading senator notes slim chances for passage if the amendment is included.

State Police reported a large quantity of roofing nails stolen from a cottage near Slippery Rock Creek. Jack Cole of Rock Springs recalled ten pounds of nails at his property and found the theft after visiting the cottage. Police continue the investigation into how the nails were taken and scattered.
