Washington reports the greatest American land victory of the Pacific war as Marines control several captured islands in the Solomons. Navy communique says counter in invasion forces repulsed enemy bombardments and U S planes bombed and set afire an enemy cruiser or destroyer.

The Navy said it had no comment on Tokyo radio reports that a small group of United States forces had landed on Makin island in the Gilbert Islands.

Sirens warning signals air raid dens and auxiliary policemen will participate with New Castle and Lawrence County simulating actual air raid conditions for fifteen minutes.
