Nine Railroad Men Arrested in $25,000 Theft Ring

In Pittsburg Pennsylvania on August 16 nine Pennsylvania railroad yard workers from Wilkinsburg were held for grand jury action after testimony that 60 to 70 freight cars were looted and goods valued around 25 000 dollars were stolen.

Three Altman Brothers Serve in United States Forces

Three sons of Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Altman of Myer avenue are serving in the U S military. Lester Altman joined June 17 1915 and now instructs in the 309th cavalry in San Antonio after a Hawaii posting. Carl M Altman enlisted June 28 1917 trained at Norfolk and sails on the Susquehanna his sixth trip to France. Five Men Added To Road Gang This Morning

Mayor Newell added five men to the road gang after fining Charles Escoe J A Wood William Wicklin Jack Wallace and Carl McNavish 110 dollars and costs each. Drunken loafers were charged against the first four while McNavish was arrested on his wife’s complaint as he returned home drunk and emptied the house. The mayor gave them a chance to work. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Ira M Ram sey of 218 Mulberry street.

Allies urged to aid Russia and pull war effort back

Dr Jacon Gavronsky says military aid for the Czecho Slovaks and a joint manifesto to the Russian people from the allies will return Russia to the war. He notes Kerensky is in retirement and Russia believes Brest Litovsk does not end the war. The allies should aid both eastern and western fronts and remove Bolshevik tyranny.

Aviator Henry MacClure Reported Missing in France

Lieut. Henry MacClure of Massachusetts in the American Flying Corps is reported missing in France. He disappeared July 15 while assisting photographing planes on the Toulon front with three other aviators.

City struggles with work or fight ordinance authority

City Solicitor James A. Gardner told council the city has no power to enforce a work or fight ordinance. He proposed two new ordinances targeting vagrants loafers and similar offenders to address gaps. An additional ordinance under Mayor Newell would allow five to fifteen days on the streets for certain offenses. Councilman Whaley suggested providing overalls and shoes to men sent to the streets.
