A reader from Lawrence County extols Mexico's eastern tablelands near Vera Cruz for year round crops, free land under conditions, and high yields of corn tobacco and bananas with minimal irrigation. Describes continuous crops, low labor, and strong market access.
A letter from August 2 1908 extols a high mountain region near Quiziba, eighteen thousand feet tall, four thousand above Pikes Peak. It notes extensive snow, variable temperatures from over 96 to under 60, frequent showers, and praises the scenery and climate.
A flurry of visits and greetings fill Evans City and nearby towns. Prof Wright of Zellenonls and Mrs Marburger with daughter Alberta spend the week in Emlenton. Many locals—Mr and Mrs Covert, Miss Riley, Mrs Hicks, and others—are hosting or visiting relatives in Erie, McKeesport, Wilkinsburg, Oberlin, and Norwalk.
Arrangements have been made between the company officials and the Western Allegheny railroad to offer special connections. The 7:30 a.m. car from Pittsburgh Street Terminal will depart on time and transfer at Vine to a fast service to Western Allegheny to connect with the local line. The 1:40 a.m. Sunday car will run on the same fast schedule to connect with that line. Western Allegheny trains arriving at East New Castle will connect with cars to New Castle. The 11 a.m. and 6:42 p.m. trains will connect with service to Butler and New Castle.
A dated travel notice lists a $1.50 fare to Cedar Point from Youngstown Ohio and return. The message references travel on a Nallimore line and August 16th, 2008.
Reporters recount a string of lightning incidents across several states. In Le Roy New York five horses were struck splitting eardrums but left largely uninjured. a West Virginia rider escaped while his horse died. Anniston Alabama trolley workers were startled by a bolt removing garments and melting watch parts. Hornell New York residents woke to a struck house but no injuries. Willimantic Connecticut firehouse equipment failed after a strike. Petersburg Indiana three youths and two horses were shocked with scorched feet and melted harness buckles, the horse gear damaged and the horses briefly unconscious. The events illustrate the deadly oddity of storms across the nation.
Edward Underwood, once a Bear Wampum resident, returned to New Castle with his family after six years in California. He plans to buy a farm in Lawrence county and move back, criticizing California’s heat and irrigation as he recalls his western years.
A rural Prohibition delegation plans to attend Prohibition day at Connell Lake on Monday with State Chairman David B. McCalmont in attendance. Rev N J McIntyre congress candidate from Corry and Oliver W Stewart of Chicago are listed among the notable Prohibitionists. The note also mentions a War Cyclorama exhibit linked to the Buller fair upcoming August 26 28.
Friends of Rev J C McDonald pastor of Epworth Methodist church have nominated his name for the office of district superintendent at the Wire Conference to be held in Spreeown Seiler 2 Rev A St ich district superintendent of the Clarion district retires this fall and backs McDonald. The conference currently has six districts with talk of reducing to five or four. Changes to New Castle churches and a vacant Mount Jackson Hillsville field are discussed ahead of the conference.
State health department reports show over 3,000 people treated at county tuberculosis dispensaries. Allegheny 86, Lehigh 344, Philadelphia 317, Delaware 278, York 219, Lackawanna 222, Cumberland 89, Cambria 82, with rising demand and some towns nearly overflowing. Butler highlights strains on facilities.
Notice from the City of New Castle Water Company states water may not be used by any consumer for building purposes without a permit detailing the exact use. Violations will result in disconnection and the consumer will bear the cost of the water service and related penalties.
