The Old Timers of Lawrence County prepare for a Cascade Park gathering with a 1 30 assembly at the pavilion, a costume pageant of pioneer descendants, old time dancing, and a grove basket picnic. The event proceeds rain or shine with the dance floor restricted to Old Timers and descendants over 21 from 1:30 to 4.
On Thursday, August 15, New Castle merchants unite for Dollar Day offering unusually low prices. Over forty shops participate and promise genuine bargains that can require a truck to haul home. The News will publish ads revealing some offerings, urging residents to adjust plans for the day.
Harry L. Hopkins, emergency relief and Works Progress administrator, has been granted authority to set regulations for the entire 4 billion dollar work relief program. The move was disclosed as the Cleveland slum clearance housing project bidding was postponed, signaling broad executive power over the program.

Mandeville W. Zenge a Missouri carpenter will plead not guilty at arraignment for the mutilation murder of Dr. Walter J. Bauer of Kirksville Missouri. Prosecutors say new witnesses place Zenge with Bauer on a highway between Ann Arbor and Chicago the night of July 30. Bauer testified on his death bed that he was kidnapped from his Ann Arbor hotel and forced to Chicago for the brutal act.
Harrisburg reports that H. Edgar Barnes of Overbrook, attorney for Governor George H. Earle and ex secretary of revenue, was appointed by the executive to a five month interim vacancy on the state supreme court.

A camping trip was suspected but the destination remained unknown as night-long hunts yielded no trace.
