Shift Remains Out When Negotiations Collapse
Local 173, United Cement Lime and Gypsum Workers Union began a strike at 3 p.m. yesterday against Medusa Portland Cement Co. in Wampum, affecting about 125 men after five hours of talks at the Brodhead Hotel in Beaver Falls ended without agreement. The union sought a two year contract with a 10 cent hourly raise, improved unemployment benefits, major medical plan, time and a quarter for Sunday extended work, and vacation boosts for long service. Company managers refused to rewrite the contract and no future negotiation sessions are planned. Local president Anthony Gidaro set up a picket line this morning.

BURTON W SIGLIN Harrisburg Pennsylvania United Press International reports that a bill to raise the state gasoline tax from 5 to 6 cents per gallon passed to the House floor. The administration argues the funds will support interstate highway program costs and road construction. The plan would yield about 58 to 63 million dollars for roads, with four cents permanent and two cents temporary. An accompanying proposal to raise driver license fees from 1 to 6 dollars for two years was also sent to the floor, potentially tripling revenue to just over 30 million dollars biennially.
