Chicago telegraphers strike widens as Gompers promises AFL support. Local unions vote on demands including 8 hour day and 15 percent pay raise while brokers fear market disruption and potential brokerage house closures. Union action spreads to Western Union and other offices nationwide.
Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, arrives in Chicago and urges arbitration to end the telegraphers strike affecting railroads and the Postal service. He meets with former Senator William B. Mason after a long conference.
Noblesville Indiana August 12. A 19 year old daughter found Mr. and Mrs. George W. Hudson dead in their farmhouse. The father was shot through the heart and the mother through the brain. The home was ransacked and $2000 from a yesterday farm sale was taken. No struggle was observed and the couple had apparently been slain as they slept.
Frank McClelland of West State street Youngstown was severely injured while attempting to board a westbound freight at Arlington avenue. He was thrown to the ground as the train sped by, fracturing his right arm in two places and suffering a deep head gash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. McClelland works as a tinsmith at McBride's tin shop on Cunningham street.
Frank Alexander of Front Street, driver for H. L. Allen, was struck on the head by a stone Saturday afternoon and briefly insane. He regained rationality by Sunday and was moved from the hospital to his home. Doctors say the injury is a scalp wound and he should recover fully soon.
Washington Aug 12 The Farmers National Bank of Boyertown Pennsylvania which was declared insolvent and placed in the hands of a receiver on July 20 has reopened its doors for business after meeting conditions set by the comptroller of the currency.
The Kirkwood hotel a summer hostelry at Highfield in the Blue Ridge mountains was destroyed by fire. Twenty five to thirty guests were in the place but two couples on the veranda awakened and all escaped.
Volant defeated Eastbrook 11 to 4 on Saturday and advances to face the strong West Middlesex team next Saturday.
A capitol investigation commission completed its work in SCH HAVEN New Jersey and prepared the detailed inquiry into the $100000 allocated for lawyers secretaries and other costs. Members left for Harrisburg to reconvene and the report reached Harrisburg this morning for transcription to Governor Stuart.
Berlin reports quote Olga Molitor daughter of Carl Hau’s victim declaring she saw Hau as murderer and believes her statement conflicts with Hau’s trial testimony. Hau’s lawyers pursue perjury claims while Baron Von Lindenau is linked to alleged letters urging Olga to marry him and to frame Hau.
Concord New Hampshire August 12 The testimony of Calvin Frye and Joseph Armstrong Mrs Eddys close secretaries will be among the first heard at the hearing into the mental condition of the Christian Science leader. Plaintiffs expect these depositions to be pivotal and the trial court is preparing the evidence for open proceedings tomorrow drawing a crowded courtroom.
A large frame building once housing the Fredonia Carriage company on Market street burned Sunday afternoon threatening homes and shops. Embers blew across the city setting roofs alight, warping the Market street viaduct and igniting the Lloyd Booth company plant. Loss estimated around 75000.
Mrs. W. H. Thomas of DusShane street mourns father Joseph Wilkins aged 66 death occurred Sunday from paralysis. Funeral services will be held at the Cypress street Hast end home on Wednesday.
Rev E F Higley pastor of the first Methodist church is expected home during the latter part of this week after a month in Porto Rico. He landed in New York on his homeward journey and will spend several days in the east before returning to New Castle.
The last quarterly conference of the year will be held at Euclid Avenue Methodist Church on August 26 evening. Rev. T. W. Douglas presiding elder will be in charge.
A Sunday afternoon blaze of unknown origin engulfed a brick building on the east side of the river between the sanitary pottery and New Castle Junction. The fire burned the structure to the ground, leaving only the walls standing.
Four lives were lost as the steamship Tennessee collided with the schooner Myromus off Bridgeport Connecticut. About 200 passengers were thrown from berths and faced panic as the schooner sank instantly and the Tennessee endured damaged gear and a near sinking.
Local milk dealers criticize State Food and Dairy Commissioner Foust over public release of milk quality tests. They argue the names of the failing 12 should have been published along with those passing. Thieves broke the front door of Hodgkinson Brothers at 13 North Mercer Street and stole clothing valued over 500 dollars. The burglary occurred after 3 a.m. Sunday with no solid clues. police indicate inadequate protection in the 3 to 7 a.m. window and left the case to state officers while collecting broken glass and the entry pick.
For Western Pennsylvania a possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon or tonight. Cooler conditions expected Tuesday with fair and cooler weather thereafter.
Nineteen arrests were made by police Saturday night and Sunday for varied offenses. Charles Rohrer fired a gun in public wounding a neighbor’s chicken. he faces a hearing. Others include cow on street violations, a brawl at Zoltan Shandy’s, fast driving, drunkenness, and resisting officers. Silas Parsons received a 60 day sentence for drunkenness disorderly conduct and carrying concealed weapons. Mayor Williams augmented the sentence for lying.

A Patterson Street father, Charles Rettig, while intoxicated, dropped his 19 month old daughter Sophia from the stairs causing a serious head injury and paralysis on the right side. Neighbors are outraged as Rettig sobers to face the tragedy.

Residents reported a large fireball in the night sky Saturday over New Wilmington. The object appeared to cross the area and dissolve before touching the ground, producing a bright light that lit porches as if struck by electricity.
