Summer reading program boosts fourth graders reading skills
Zina Wise's 10-year-old son Ward lagged a year and a half in reading until a five week intensive program at John F. Kennedy Primary Center. About 30 New Castle district children joined volunteers for 90 minutes daily, with two field trips and meals. Results show more word decoding, confidence, and home reading interest, while third graders fear falling behind without continued support.
