Veterans protest plan for dump near Adirondack forest
About 50 veterans gathered near Veterans Memorial Forest in Ava New York to block a proposed Oneida County Waste Authority dump that could accept up to 220000 tons of trash annually. They fear harming a sacred site and argue local options should precede county land use while supporters cite safeguards and proximity tests. Public hearings are set in Marcy as NYS DEC weighs permits.

Montana flames chase hundreds from homes
In the Bitterroot Valley Montana fires forced hundreds from mountain homes and destroyed dozens of buildings as authorities warned winter may be the only cure to the worst fire season in decades. Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck said more help from the military could be needed with a fire season that could extend two months or more. President Clinton planned to visit an Idaho fire as 21 large fires burned in the northern Rockies, 20 in Montana. Some fires lacked active containment due to crew shortages.

WHO study says tobacco tax hikes save lives worldwide
The World Health Organization reports that a 10 percent rise in tobacco taxes could push about 42 million people to quit and prevent roughly 10 million deaths, largely in developing nations. Higher prices curb youth use, and tax revenue could fund anti smuggling efforts.
