Westminster college hosts the 34th annual United Presbyterian missionary conference in New Castle. About 600 official delegates and 130 leaders add to a swelling town population with hundreds of visitors. A tent city houses delegates as meetings run in the tent auditorium college chapel and church through Friday evening.
Ernest Malson and his wife brought a huge puffball, 4014 inches in circumference and seven pounds, to The News office after finding it by Pulaski road between Pulaski and New Castle. Old Timers Day merchants display antiques and residents' images, garments, quilts, and furniture in South Side windows. Police issue alarm for teller Alfred Aneelook after $13,500 missing in weekend bridge receipts. Edmund Drummond, 26, of Farrell, dies from injuries at Shenango Furnace plant in Sharpsville.
Daily weather data for a 24 hour period ending at 5 p.m. Monday lists a high of 65 and a low of 39 with no precipitation. River stage is 5.3 feet. An accompanying note records a separate period with a maximum 92, minimum 65, and precipitation 0.3 inches.

A downtown blaze in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania damaged McCrory’s department store and nearby shops, causing damage over 150000. Four firemen were seriously injured and treated at Mercy Hospital after being overcome by smoke. Fire crews battled the flames for hours while central city traffic was halted.
MANASSAS Va Aug 8 17 900 National Guardsmen prepared to defend Washington 20 miles away as a simulated tank assault by 10 ton field battleships was stopped by hastily dug trenches and improvised obstacles near the Bull Run battle site. Maj Gen James K Parsons urged readiness as engineers showed tanks blocked by beer can mines and other barriers, arguing fortifications like Maginot and Siegfried defenses would curb such attacks.
Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board officers aided by federal agents and state police raided Salvatore La Pinta at 21 Franklin Avenue Ellwood City. They seized a fifty gallon still a coll and about fifty gallons of mash. La Pinta was arrested brought to New Castle arraigned before Alderman James C Brice and held on $500 bond. Empty corn sugar sacks surrounded the still and mash appeared ready to cook. No finished product was found.

Lawrence County Public Assistance board sets a minimum wage of 40 cents an hour for unskilled relief labor under a new law. Workers must earn their relief via projects funded by townships counties municipalities or school districts. Willam Capps of Somerset Kentucky, 19, crushed foot when slipping under a freight train west of Vermilion. In extreme pain he amputated his own foot with a pocket knife, fashioned a tourniquet and improvised crutches, then walked three-quarters of a mile to Vermilion for ambulance transport to Lorain. He lacked medical aid for over seven hours and arrived in critical condition from shock and blood loss.
Catherine Spohn, 36, died after leaping from the South Main street viaduct on Route 8. Police said she and Frank Meadows, WPA worker, had been visiting tap rooms and were estranged from their mates. Meadows gave an incoherent account.
Secretary of Commerce Richard P. Brown announced lower workmen's compensation insurance rates in Pennsylvania, averaging 30 percent below the 1937 Act premiums. He said the cuts will help factories compete with other states, freeing payroll and working capital to spur industrial activity. AUY in New Castle.
At a Monday session in First Presbyterian Church of New Castle ministers and Shenango Presbytery approved a $150 immediate aid to Enon Valley Presbyterian Church to ease emergency debt of about $1300. A temporary supply pastor could be appointed upon Enon church request. Continued on page two.
Manila reports a baby girl born with the heart outside the chest but otherwise normal. Doctors used a glass bowl to cover the exposed heart while awaiting possible corrective surgery. The infant, daughter of 24 year old Esperanza Rafael, shows a rare congenital condition with only one similar case in medical history.
Ebensburg Pa Aug 8 The state supreme court will open early next month for a pre primary session to hear appeals on proposed fatal option liquor elections Chief Justice Kephart said the session will be in Philadelphia with no date set yet The court will hear appeals from decisions in lower courts if any are filed following Judge Egan’s ruling that 12 liquor referenda planned in Allegheny County for the Sept 12 primaries were legal
Prosecutors hope to finish the second graft trial within a week as they begin questioning witnesses in the bonding conspiracy case. Jurors chosen include James P. Kirk Pittsburgh city treasurer and Allegheny Democratic chairman H O Temple and Vick lov Skok, allied with Kirk in his insurance business. The panel includes seven men and five women with two alternates.
A five year old girl died after her clothing ignited from a bonfire in a vacant lot off Center Adler rear East Long Avenue. Neighbors tried to smother the flames as onlookers, including Mrs. LeRoy McClendon and E R Huston of Huston Hardware, aided in removing burning clothing. The child, Camilla Zimmerman daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl Ettinger of 128 Frank Way, died at 9 01 p m at the hospital. Continuous coverage continues on page three.
WPA district office moves its operations to Franklin after years in the local building. Branch manager Walter M. Todd says staff reassignment varies, with some transferring to Franklin and others being let go. The final status of current employees remains uncertain.
