Forest Fire at Snakes Rest Sparks Quick Fire Department Action
A two foot high blaze swept a brush covered hill west of Snakes Rest shortly after 1 pm. Chief Connery and the Park avenue department fought the flames with hand extinguishers and a cart, then carried the cart over the crest to apply water. No property damage occurred though several responders were burned or sick from smoke. The cause was likely sparks from an engine on the Erie road or arson by boys. The drought and west wind fueled rapid spread toward homes, prompting prompt action to prevent a larger fire.
