Lawrence County Scouts Seek Medal for Snakes Kill Merit

Lawrence County Boy Scouts may earn a merit medal by proving they killed ten water snakes to protect fish and reduce floods. Pennsylvania Fish Commission in Harrisburg will award the medal. Harrisburg aug 2 governor Gifford Pinchot signed a commutation freeing Bertrand Succop from Allegheny jail after about five months of a malfeasance in office sentence. Succop formerly directed Pittsburgh supplies under mayor Charles E Kline who resigned to serve a jail term.

NRA Pledges Reach 240 Today in New Castle

At noon today the New Castle post office reported 240 certificates of compliance from local employers for President Roosevelt's NRA program. Each signer received an NRA display set in return for their pledge.

New all time heat records for August 1

Pennsylvanians faced a heat wave with new August 1 records across many cities led by 106 degrees in Lancaster. Harrisburg hit 97.2 and Philadelphia saw 9.7 with ten heat deaths reported. drownings added to tragedy as Pittsburgh and western towns stayed hot.

Hire 40 Workmen for Road Jobs Begin Tomorrow

Forty unemployed men of New Castle were given state road jobs by the state's cooperative employment bureau at the M C A. marking the first large group to reserve employment at the office for weeks. The 40 will go to work on various state projects in the county districts on Thursday morning. Hope For Heat Relief In Eastern Regions

Cloudy skies were expected to bring relief to Philadelphia and surrounding areas from a deadly heat wave that claimed 14 lives in four days. The region's high reached a record 97.2 degrees on August 1 as several drownings occurred while residents sought escape in cooling waters. In New York City area 22 deaths over two days marked a third record heat day with temperatures near 95 degrees and hospitals strained by heat victims.

Local grocers back Roosevelt plan for NRA code meeting

The New Castle and Lawrence County Grocers and Meat Dealers Association voted to back President Roosevelt and the National Recovery Act. Dry Bureau To Cease To Exist On August 10

Washington reports the prohibition bureau will be dissolved on August 10 under a broader executive reorganization. About 1,000 agents will transfer from the old bureau to the Justice Department under J Edgar Hoover, with losses around 1,000 jobs. Businessmen Drafted For N R A Drive

More than 600 business leaders nationwide were drafted by President Roosevelt to lead the reemployment campaign.
