Judge Porter rules the city may enforce an ordinance requiring power brakes on traction cars and declines permanent injunction. New trial denied for Charles Hobel in a separate accident suit. report continues on page six.
Mercer Pennsylvania reports the first fairs of the season with Butler August 22 to 26 and Kinsman August 23 to 25. Conneaut Lake runs August 29 to September 2 and Mercer September 5 to 8. Pulaski September 12 to 15 and Stoneboro September 19 to 22. Mercer and Stoneboro share a $1000 state appropriation.
S Baker of Beckford street told police he was attacked by three men on Long avenue with a black-jack. One struck him over the head as he walked. Police were investigating the incident.
Two more cases of scarlet fever were reported to Health Officer McCandless this afternoon. One case is in the home of Evan McNeal on Pollock Avenue and the other in the home of Thomas J. Thomas on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Stammy Gebony was arrested Sunday evening on a charge of resisting an officer and fined 15 dollars after being arraigned Monday morning before Mayor Lusk.
Frank Dambach of Kimberly Stone petitions the court to sell quarry property near Ellwood City to pay about 10 000 in debts. The receiver was appointed on a petition by Frank H. Douthitt. Appraisers Lee R. Gordon and William Kern were named to fix the property's value.
Charles W. Hicks obtains a divorce from Anna Hicks after alleging she has another husband linked to William McDonald of Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. Flora B. Burnett is granted a divorce from Harry G. Burnett for desertion. Margaret Breen receives a divorce from William C. Breen after four days of marriage. An alias subpoena is issued in Sarah T. Hutton versus Luther F. Hutton. Hendry named new secretary for the Y M C A Boys Department starting September 1 at Youngstown.
Altoona PA August 1 William Decker a member of Company M Tenth Regiment National Guard of Pennsylvania was shot in the abdomen at Ant Hill woods rifle range and is believed dying at Altoona hospital He rose in front of the target pit while Sergeant D Rank Stubblefield fired from the 1000 yard range Stubblefield a Pennsylvania railroad shop apprentice in this city was involved in the marksmanship test
A number of New Castle Bible students will travel to Grove City this week for the annual Bible conferences from August 4 to 14. Five distinguished Scotch divines and educators will attend this year.
In Meriden Connecticut Joe Soudak awoke to a note from Mary Rogers saying she would elope with her true love the best man. Believing it a joke he proceeded to a church ceremony where guests awaited. Mary and the best man fled to New York prompting police involvement.
The New York Express traveling between New York and St. Louis was wrecked near Eaton station eighteen miles east of Parkerburg. Engineer John Murray of Grafton was killed and Fireman Albert Adams of Clarksburg was seriously injured. No passengers were hurt.
W. S. Pole a real estate dealer in Lorain Ohio broke his right arm in two places while cranking his automobile to help raise a $12,000 fund for the YMCA. He had the arm dressed and returned to solicit pledges, securing $600 despite the injury.
Harrisburg officials say there is no statewide epidemic of infantile paralysis. The Bethlehem area reports 41 cases, described as a mild outbreak rather than a general epidemic.
Secretary B A Hoover of the New Castle Y M C A returned home after a month off with friends in Clearfield and resumes charge of local association affairs. Assistant Secretary Dalton departed for Silver Bay for Y M C A training school for the coming month.
Dr Crippen and Ethel Leneve await the British led case after a dramatic voyage from London to Quebec. Crippen admits identity and is remanded to jail for 15 days while Leneve, ill and unfit to appear, reportedly collapsed under stress as the Scotland Yard inspector and authorities pursue the case.
A 1909 to 1910 roster celebrates wireless as lifesaving. It cites the Republic rescue after a collision off Nantucket, the Slavonia and Racine incidents, Onto and Alaskan coast losses, the Kentucky saving Alamo, Minnehaha aid, Comus fire response, and the Crippen and Le Neve capture off Father Point.
Police escort Crippen and Miss Leneve to parliament dungeons away from ordinary cells. Crippen sits silent on a 7 by 4 cell as Miss Leneve sobs, refusing sleep since Crippen’s arrest aboard the Montrose. Authorities fear poison and note a revolver tossed overboard.
M. C. Rose, Civil War veteran and well known resident, is seriously ill at Shenango Valley hospital. His condition is very low today and recovery is feared.
Delegates from New Castle and Martins Ferry meet in Pittsburg to decide on ending the Amalgamated Association of Sheet and Tinplate workers strike that began July 1 1909. Most unions favor ending the walkout while some lodges continue the stoppage. Results hinge on Pride of New Castle delegates as pages indicate a conference vote decision expected later today.
The Ohio Amusement company showed the Jeff Johnson Reno July 4 fight films in a South Mill street theatre. A large crowd attended the opening and continued all afternoon with ongoing screenings. City officials had considered prohibition but no action was taken by the mayor, who was away, and the pictures will be shown again tomorrow.
Lying side by side on seven beds in New Brighton hospital are Jacob Weild and his wife and five children. The seven members suffer from typhoid fever and are in grave condition though hospital authorities hope for recovery. Weild and family live on a small farm at Unionville in Brush Creek territory about six miles from New Brighton.
Police court activity surged over a weekend with thirty six arrests for minor offenses. About $171 was paid into the treasury, including $11 from a gambling raid on Moravia Street. Roughly $30 of the money is held as forfeits awaiting a hearing this evening.
Lieutenant Weddell led a police raid on Mrs Swaninger s alleged disorderly house. The proprietress was fined 35 dollars. two inmates 10 dollars each. and three visitors 5 dollars apiece.

Washington August 1 Willis L Moore chief of the weather bureau announced there will be no general warm wave over the country this week Temperatures to be moderate in the east early in the week rise in the Mississippi valley Tuesday and eastern states Wednesday Northwest near or below average A disturbance in the Rocky Mountains to move eastward by Thursday bringing unsettled weather showers and a fall in temperatures.
Attorney Harvey E. Martin and wife rescued two friends from drowning while camping on the Slippery Rock creek near Harlansburg. John Dittman and wife, daughter of former Speaker John F. Cox, battled deep water and exhaustion as Mrs Dittman was pulled from the stream after three submersions. Mrs Martin used a pole to reach Dittman and, with her husband, hauled him to the rock while Mrs Dittman revived.
John G. Carlisle former secretary of the treasury under Cleveland died at the Hotel Walcott in New York. The funeral will be held in Washington at 1426 K Street NW before the body is sent to Covington Kentucky for interment.
The city treasurer distributes nearly $5,000 to city employees for salaries covering the past two weeks and the previous month. The precise payment today is $4,612.53.
Misses Laura Wallis May Murphie and Phyllis Williams of Sharon traveled by car to New Castle on a Saturday and spent the day at Cascade park.
The Goehring family holds its third reunion at the grave of Charles Goehring in Eckert station Beaver county on August 17. A family history completed over the past year will be read during the gathering and members from Pitts burg Harmony New Castle and Butler traction line are expected.
H F A Meissel claims he was defrauded when buying a large hay mow from Andrew Kellner at the Kellner farm in NeShannon township. He says outside looked fine but inside held weeds, seeking $96 off a $200 note he gave Kellner, with E M Ferrer as security. The note was later sold to Adolph Green who seeks collection, with a court rule returnable August 15.
